I actually found Depp more tolerable in this movie than the first. I mean he isn't in the first at all except for the closing moments, but his only line in that movie is abysmal. It soured a lot of that movie for me.

Starting my MCU rewatch before Endgame:

 

Iron Man - 4/5 - Holds up pretty well.

 

I was looking to pick up some of the early MCU movies for cheap, but annoyingly, that's not really how this seems to work. All the MCU films are at least $15 digitally and at least $20 on discs. This shouldn't surprise me, but it come on. I understand that many of these films probably make good money still, but I doubt that Thor 1 or 2 are in much demand.

Counterpart season 2

 

This show never got to the level that it should, strong double performance by JK Simmons and some neat ideas but a lot of sloppy coincidences and conspiracies mixed in.

The LEGO Movie 2: The 2nd Part 2.5/5

 

The movie has its moments of fun but everything just wasn’t awesome. I just found the creative magic the first one had is kind of lost in this 2nd outing. It has some, but not the surprise like we got with the reveal in the first movie

So I watched Iron Man 2 and a Best Picture nominee last night and Iron Man 2 was the better film...

 

Iron Man 2 - 2/5 - It's not great for many reasons well covered, but there are still a few cool moments. It's still better than most of the DC films we've gotten since.

 

Bohemian Rhapsody - 1/5 - What a piece of junk. While I know Queen's hits, I'm not at all familiar with the story of the band or Freddie Mercury in particular. Still, I have to imagine that he was a more interesting figure than what we get in this film. Malek's performance fine, but he was asked to hit the same note again and again, leaving me feeling like there was so much more to his character that was unexplored or glossed over in the script. What they did instead was put in every cliche from Walk Hard, from the record producers to the terrible sequences where they invent their iconic songs. In the end those songs are really all that Bohemian Rhapsody has going for it, but they're also a crutch. Queen songs are repeatedly used as a substitute for genuine emotion. It's a bland, boring look at an eccentric personality that just happens to get to play some great music every once in awhile to remind you why you care about anything happening on screen. How this found its way into the awards season is a complete mystery.

Queen and Freddie Mercury are one of my favorite bands/performers, and I haven't seen this film yet, but I've heard the same things you just outlined. It's all a cliche, it's basically Walk Hard played straight (uhh . . . which misses the whole point of Walk Hard) and that almost none of it is accurate to the actual history of Queen or Freddie Mercury, to the point where there are manufactured "big" moments that never happened at those times and places in Queen's real life history.

 

I have heard the end Live Aid concert is awesome though, is that true at least?

 

Between this and Green Book getting great reviews and awards consideration tells me just how bland even Americans' "classier" tastes are. I mean, Bohemian Rhapsody and Green Book in the same year you have The Rider, Blindspotting, If Beale Street Could Talk, etc.? Jesus.

The Live Aid concert is cool in that it's a very lengthy sequence where Queen plays some greatest hits to a huge crowd, so whatever emotional impact that would have on you if you just watched that sequence is probably the emotional impact the it will have in context. In the film they use that sequence as a replacement for a genuine emotional crescendo.

 

I looked up some of the actual history after watching the film, and they do indeed take some pretty significant liberties. I don't generally mind that, in that I'd rather have a good story told than have a completely true one. If I want the real history, I'd rather watch a documentary. I'm watching a film like this to feel the drama, regardless of the truth. Still, what I feel like they did is tweak the real history and still manage not to find the drama.

 

Maybe it's unfair, but I felt so much more watching A Star Is Born, both during the concert scenes and the behind the stage drama. I was a bit of a critic of how A Star Is Born was shot, but I'm starting to reconsider that. I felt like the relentless proximity of the camera took away from the magnitude of the staging, but the Live Aid concert had all that magnitude and more (plus better music!), and I just wasn't feeling it.

Yeah, I'm all for changing things for a film as opposed to a documentary, but there's already plenty of real life drama they could have mined, there's no need to make stuff up or go the Walk Hard route.

 

I just recently re-watched Oliver Stone's 1991 film The Doors (another band I love) and it's still fantastic and fits that band's vibe perfectly. There's no reason a Queen movie shouldn't work in 2019 but ever since the bands surviving members wanted a "cleaner" take of the band by becoming producers on the film and shutting down Sacha Baron Cohen's allegedly more realistic and honest take of the band, I didn't have much hope for this film from the start. Hagiographies are not a lot of fun to watch. Getting Bryan Singer and Rami Malek I thought would help, but apparently not so.

 

Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody both seem to be films that aren't good, but saved by Herculean performances from the cast. But it's always been said that acting can't save a bad movie, no matter how hard you try.

Shouldn't work as a real, intense, interesting, musical biopic, I mean, not a film that simply makes money. That's what we should have gotten was a real movie. Not a straight version of Walk Hard (whose entire existence was made to point fun at the very things Bohemian Rhapsody apparently tries to do). I'll see the film, but I'm not expecting anything great.

Vice too. Bale and co. are the only reason to watch it, and they can almost trick you into thinking the movie was good. 

 

I try to not be so cynical about these things, but as I was walking out of Green Book I thought: "Two charming leads in an average period drama that says 'hey, maybe racism isn't so cool'. This will win Best Picture"

yeah I know what you meant, but honestly you know the studio heads don't ….and honestly the surviving members of Queen don't care either. They were heavily involved as I understand it but from the way several make it sound they were more interested in getting their version out over the truth. I was interested in seeing it, but then started to hear about fishy timeline issues and kind of let it fall off my radar. I'm sure I'll see it eventually, but after hearing you and others have said it won't be anything I go out of my way to see.

I'm really interested to see Vice but it does seem like it fits the Green Book / Bohemian Rhapsody issues for sure. 

 

And anyone who has seen better movies seems to say that about Green Book, so you were right on point. You knew what was up lol.

Vice was horrible. I don’t even think Bale was that great either. He played a boring old white guy and the script wasn’t that great so maybe he could have done amazing but it was all meh.

mix of horror and war movie, pulls off the horror a bit better than the war but not until about 2/3s into the movie

Anime with an interesting concept of having your mind go back into a younger version of yourself to help people, final episode wrapped up a bit too conveniently. other than that though it is good

the main villain and conflict are 1,000% ignorable... but the inevitable wait for the resolution to the overall arc of the main characters makes it all worth it...it was an affecting ending to me, and as always the visuals are top of the heap.

Another jackie chan double feature saturday 

 

Crime Story

 

This was played as a serious crime/action without any of the slapstick that you often get in jackie chan movies and it really wasn't very good. There was one inventive fight scene in the middle of the film where they are battling on these canvas overhangs but other than that it is very forgettable, there weren't even outtakes in the credits.

Police Story 3 - Supercop

 

The last 10 minutes of this movie are absolutely insane, I am legitimately shocked that apparently no one was seriously injured or outright killed, some of if not the best stunt work you will ever see. The rest of the movie is fine but nothing special.

Big Mouth -  My Furry Valentine 

 

The funniest show on television drops a double episode out of no where and it isn't a throw away one either, the net season will definitely build off the events of this special. All the wonderful random humor you would expect from the show.

Aquaman - 3.5/5 - Enjoyed Momoa but the rest of the cast felt flat to me. Not surprising for a first installment of a super hero franchise to suffer from unevenness and glut. Hopefully the success of this will let Wan have total control because I think AM2 has a ton of potential. 

 

Creed - 3.5/5 & Creed 2 - 3/5 - This was just a sly way for Stallone to make Rocky 7 & 8 without getting any backlash for t.

My weekend was all about D’Bears for my viewings

 

Paddington 4.5/5

My aunt was down for a visit and just wanted light to watch. I recommended this on Netflix cause I think the movie is just charming as hell, and by the end. She did too

 

Paddington 2 (4K Uk Import) 4.75/5

. . .and so we watched the 2nd movie the next day. Pretty much same reaction as the first, but with a few more right in the feels. Now anyone with a 4K player, import this disc now. This is easily, hands down my favourite looking disc in the format in my collection. Great use of hdr, amazing colours and a pristine looking disc.

Not on the same level as Paddington, but still brought the warm and fuzzies in my viewing. The Oscars were right to give them a nod in the SFX category. Loved the look of our friendly childhood toys and the way they interacted with the world environment. Well worth a viewing I think

I watched Lords of Chaos - the movie about the rise of Mayhem and the Norwegian Black Metal scene. 

 

It was a lot of fun. Whether or not it was true or accurate seems to be a hot topic. The best part is that they casted a chubby Jewish kid to play Varg Vikernes and he is absolutely bent about it. So fantastic.

 

@Bloodporne you watch it yet? They actually had a showing of it in Huntington Village theater last Saturday night.

True Detective season 3

 

Not as great as the first season but infinitely better than season 2. Great performance by Mahershala Ali and what has to be some of the best old age make-up I have ever seen, first couple of times I saw old Hays I thought he was played by a different actor. Biggest complaint is that the reveal of what happened to the kids, just feels like it was thrown out there with not enough clues in the first 6 or so episodes given to the audience.

Oh actually I think I'm good. I tend to not be into Metal-related movies and shows and I've had so little time and patience for movies lately unfortunately that I have to be picky.

Grinch - 4.5/5 - I laughed way more than I expected and my wife loved it. 

 

Ralph Breaks the Internet - 3.5/5 - High expectations for the Internet jokes and came way disappointed. Also most of the new characters introduces fell flat. 

 

Goodfellas - 5/5 - Karen! It’s still fucking great. 

 

Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse - 6/5 - GOTY. Should have beat Green Book. 

 

Upgrade - 3.5/5 - Predictable Sci-Fi movie plot but still enjoyable.

Finished Memories of the Alhambra

 

I watched it for two reasons (well more than 2)

1. To prove to @thewhyteboar there are good kdramas!

2. That I shouldn't be recommending people see it if I haven't seen it myself.

 

So I have seen it, I thought it was very good. The fist couple of episodes take a while to warm up to (which seems to be the case with a lot of Korean dramas) and the premise of this AR game seems kind of wacky at first but that changes and there are some frustrating things plotwise but they get ironed out later. But overall enjoyed it, recommend it, give it a 8/10!

If someone wants to watch good South Korean TV dramas, go watch Goblin and Mr. Sunshine (on Netflix). Most K dramas are still bad/obnoxious but it's slowly getting better. Those two are great.
