Here in NJ, on top of expense it's exceedingly inconvenient to see any kind of specialist. There's no full service shop that's not a hospital. Need your knee fixed? Go to the ortho (take the time off work because appointments are only during business hours and are 2 weeks out). Get told to get an X-Ray, leave, make an appointment a week later with an x-ray/imaging place (take the time off work because appointments are only during business hours). Make a new appointment with your ortho to review the x-ray (time off work because business hours), get told that it's inconclusive so make a new appointment with imaging place for MRI. Go get MRI a week or 2 later (more time off work because business hours). Make new appoint for a week or 2 later to go over MRI with ortho (time off etc. etc.). This is all just to figure out why your knee hurts. Treatment is more of the same. I'd rather just hurt.
