I mean I don't get the appeal of watching someone else play a game I could be playing (unless it's like a tips and tricks helpful video), but fuck I can't stand that smug, smarmy asshole.

I feel the same in everything you said. I despise him so much.

I used to feel the same but watching someone like broken machine rip thru BF or JCDR/Smug/Knee just wreck an shit in Tekken or SF can be pretty enjoyable and educational.

I can also get watching a clip of an amazing play in a game, or someone testing out a new game so I can see what it's like, or even something new added to an existing game, like say the newest gun in Warzone, but tuning in at a specific time because Game Player X is starting his steam...uh yeah no. I get part of the appeal of watching streamers isn't so much watching them play a game, but because of their personality, but well way too many streamers have shit personalities that I can't stand either.

Saying watching Twitch is just, "watching other people playing videogames," is like saying watching a movie is just watching people roleplay. Yes it's literally true, yes it deliberately pedantic in the interest of ignoring the parts of that activity that people who enjoy it find enjoyable.

A talk show host shitting on how other people spend their time is fucking rich, regardless of who is saying it.

To that I say good luck

He's a boomer so he's not the person to say it, but despite that... there's some truth to the points he's making.  I like Cape shit/fantasy/escapism/etc and think it can be healthy, but it's also heavily prioritized now which cartoonifies the media landscape more than it should be imho.  But growing up in the 90's I'm also aware that it's a reaction to the days when stuff like MCU films were gatekeeped in favor of plenty of worse shit that got made (a lot of which everyone was told was important even if it really wasn't), so it's still an improvement even if you can't help but feel burned out on spectacular blockbuster type stuff after a while.

I don't really get the appeal of let's plays, but I think it's safe to say political twitch (streamers like Primecayes, Bastiat, Dylan Burns, Vaush, Destiny, TheSerfs, Eristocracy, etc) have gotten to a point where it's absolutely a more useful source of political commentary  than the larger, more boomery media channels/shows.

I also think it's super boring and kinda weird, but who am I to tell people what to enjoy. More power to them.

I like all sorts of things people think are lame as hell. Who cares, move on.

I don't watch streamers. But for many many many people, the point of watching the streamer is the streamer, not the game they're playing. Again, a talk show host saying this is hilarious, people watch specific streamers for the exact same reason they watch Maher.

There are a variety of reasons to watch someone play a game and some of them even date back before twitch days.

a. I think this is the biggest reason, people watch for the person who is playing not necessarily the game. You watch the person reaction, say stuff, their insight perhaps, generally if the person is cool enough the game doesn't matter. Someone like a Dr. Disrespect was a total character and sure he was good at the game but people were mainly there because he was an asshole. I feel like this is closer to "wasting your time" watching a talk show than "wasting your time watching someone play a video game"

b. Someone want to watch a person who is highly skilled. Let's face it, you're never going to be as good as Justin Wong but it's pretty cool to see him pull off some stuff. So watch him play and that's fun. Same for esports, you're watching people who are really good at the game play, and maybe you'll get something from it, maybe you won't but "Why not play the game?" is not a valid excuse. Also, this hearkens back to the arcade games when you'd go to an arcade (at least I did) and watch people duke it out in MK. Sure you could jump in and play but I never did. I'd watch some MK and then go play some beat em up, get my quarter's worth of money. :p

c. The least engaging but also valid reason is, maybe you just want to see what the game is before you decide to play it. If you're iffy on a game or just want to see what it's like, watch someone play it to get a grasp of what it is first. Also, with these console shortages sometimes the only thing you can do is sit back and watch someone play a game.

At the end of the day it's a form of entertainment and no more a waste of time than watching a TV show or a sports game.

Not to mention there definitely are streamers out there who make it a goal and are good at curating a fun community experience between everyone in chat, chat and the hosts, etc, which can be rare, even on twitch.  But when that happens it really does feel more like hanging out, and in that sense the appeal of it makes more sense to me.

When my brother was little he loved watching me play. I never understood it. He could be playing his own game. Often he even owned the same game, but it seemed if he could choose between watching me or playing himself, he’d rather watch me.

I was nowhere near as entertaining as these streamers. I barely even talked.

I don’t mind watching a streamer to get an idea for a game, if I want to see what it’s like. The few I’ve watched were engaged with the chat enough that I could even ask questions.

If a person enjoys it, watching streamers regularly is no more a waste of time than watching anything else, or even playing the games yourself. It’s entertainment. I wouldn’t be surprised if Bill was just jealous of some of these streamers.

Watch Bill Maher set up a "just chatting" twitch channel next year

Good luck to him if he does.  Political Twitch is pretty gifted at debate.  If he says something cringe and gets asked to be on a panel it probably wouldn't be a good look for him either way, assuming he doesn't get banned first.

Basically.

My political awakening is due to George Carlin and Bill Maher. However I stopped watching him when I lost HBO and well am far left. The appeal of a dude that is "cut a liberal and a fascist bleeds" is non-existance.

I think I was fine with bill maher until he made Religulous, then I was like "okay, you're just a troll."

He was a lot of Gen-Xer's entry into politics and socially conscious thinking along with Trey and Matt from South Park. Gen_X'ers are the reason both are still on the air... nobody under the age of 40 cares what Bill Maher thinks and nobody under the age of 30 knows who the fuck he is.

He's one of those people where even when he has a legitimate point, I can't get myself to give him even that just because I utterly loathe his demeanor.

It's his smugness, and general "I'm going to be an asshole, and I don't care who I offend" attitude. He wants to piss people off.

and what pisses HIM off even more is nobody gives a fuck anymore.

Actually I'd say what pisses him off is that people get pissed off and upset, and then he's all, "oh you people are such babies; everyone's so easily offended nowadays".

I saw a tweet or something recently that said something like "how did the generation that grew up on South Park and family guy become so easily offended by everything." I think there is some truth to that, but I also think we've gradually gained more understanding of others struggles. We've gained more cultural empathy, as it were. At the same time, one should be able to assess whether a statement comes from apathy/ignorance vs. when it comes from malice. People who joke about something that is offensive to someone can't complain that offense was taken. But also to the offended, sometimes examine the intent and why it offends you rather than just blast off on someone on twitter.

Bill maher is a smug prick, but I think if people are actively offended by stuff he says, I think that says a lot.

main key difference between Bill Maher and South Park/Family Guy is those shows are funny. He’s just an asshole that claimed to be comedian for cover.

I think it’s much more the latter than the former.

When was the last time anybody got upset by something Bill Maher said? He made Religulous what, 15 years ago? Last time I checked he wasn't canceled. He's a desperate old man trying desperately to stay relevant.

The biggest thing I can think of is when he used the n-word in a joke. He had some senator on, and the senator said they'd love to have him come out and work the fields with them. Maher replied, "worked the fields? Senator, I'm a house n***er." The next week Ice Cube was on trying to explain to him why it's not OK for him to be making those jokes, and why they need to get to the root of why he even thought it was OK, and Maher got all defensive basically going, "Oh for fuck's sake I already apologized; what more do you want from me? I'm not a racist." The man cannot take criticism, and he doesn't apologize fully and sincerely for anything. He even once did a bit about how celebrities need to stop apologizing.

There have been more little instances over the years. It hasn't made huge, national news because he's really not that relevant, and the only people who seem to care what he has to say are people who are already his fans, or liberals who can't stand him and get upset at stupid things he says, and just want him to go away.

That proves my point though... I remember that now that you bring it up and yeah folks got a little upset, Ice Cube checked him and the world kept spinning. His show is still on, he wasn't canceled so what the fuck is he whining about? The man is TRULY irrelevant.

I actually watched that episode and thought it was so discussing how he had all black guests on to “excuse” him and all say that, yeah he’s not racist, and give him a pass. The Ice Cube part was great. The look on Maher’s face was so funny, because Cube wasn’t giving him a pass at all, which was flying in the face of the entire purpose of the episode. lol

Also fuck Bill Maher for spoiling each of the Best Picture nominees this year. I watched a clip from a few weeks ago where he was complaining about the Oscars, and how each of the BP nominees were depressing after such a shitty year of 2020, and then goes on to say how each one ends! Asshole. Fuck.
