Calgary city council has hammered the final nail in the coffin of a bid for the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games.

Council voted today to scuttle a bid following last week's non-binding plebiscite, in which 56 per cent of those who went to the polls voted 'no' to bidding for the games. Calgary was the host city of the 1988 Winter Olympics. The venues from those games, which are still in use three decades later, were the foundation of another potential bid. But a cost-sharing agreement between the federal, provincial and municipal governments wasn't finalized until Oct. 31, which was less than two weeks prior to the plebiscite.

Stockholm and a joint Italian bid from Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo are still in the running to host the 2026 Games.

The city held a plebiscite and a majority voted against bidding for the Olympics. For those who don't know, Calgary (and Alberta in general) is experiencing a 5+ year major downturn on the back of low oil prices.

I'm very happy about this.

Pick one city and be done with it.  All future Olympics will be held in this site.  All revenue generated from the Olympics themselves will be split among the nations that win medals, based on total medals won.  The nation that hosts the Olympics is free to use the facilities as they see fit, and keep all revenue from these events during non-Olympics periods, with responsibility to maintain and modernize the venues belonging to the host nation.

Why would you be happy GOSH! Vancouver 2010 was AWESOME, this would’ve been even better. ALSO Calgary (all of Alberta really) could use a make work project — this would be much better than a fucking pipeline.

edit: @mclumber1‘s idea is the worst idea in the history of ideas.

I think only one city is lame but there should be a set rotation of cities that want the games and can handle everything that comes along with it. New cities can be added to the rotation provided they meet the standards.
