Bush, to his credit, flatly rejected to the point of public performance the holy war against Muslims that white evangelicals are frothing at the mouth over; also he is not openly racist or willfully cruel. Trump gives them what they want.

Bush was certainly not as openly horrible as Trump, but he definitely pushed the Christian narrative from time to time.

Stuff like this I vaguely remember. He didn't go after Islam in the way Trump is but it's weird how much the evangelical right has rallied around Trump more than any other Republican president.

It's not weird when you recognize the American white evangelical movement as a political force started in opposition to desegregation. They're a movement of white supremacist patriarchy, it's not surprising trump is their guy at all. They don't actually believe in that godliness stuff.

It seems like it's way older than that. The Puritans didn't come here to escape religious oppression, they just thought it was bullshit that they didn't get to be the religious oppressors.

Well religion and the religious right aren't that new, white evangelicals aren't new, white evangelism growing as a political force and becoming the religious right is only since the late 60's/mid 70's.

That's true - the reaches of the organization are impressive. Indoctrination is powerful stuff.
