Projection.

The Right perceives well sourced, multiply attested stories as wild allegations and political hit jobs.

So when they go to actually create a political hit job, they're surprised it's pretty tough. In their minds, these reporters get one anonymous tip and they're ready to run it on the front page of the NYT.

This is how those in power will make this go away. By making sure that it becomes so common and that the entire process becomes so tainted that no one will pay any attention to any allegations in the future.

The Republicans are going to hit back on this one. Every major political candidate for the Dems is going to have multiple women come forward. It's going to happen. Because they see it all as political tricks, rather than something they need to address. They see everything as politics.

Remember when I insisted that Franken was a test case for weaponizing #MeToo and that Democrats were idiots for taking the bait?

Like the woman who was trying to claim that Roy Moore impregnated her as a teen in order to expose the lazy and politically motivated reporting of the Post, only for the Post to see right through her and quickly figure the whole thing out?

Also, I know that anyone that would cook up such a scheme would absolutely not be thinking this whole thing through, but what in their minds happens even if they successfully get rid of Mueller? Do they think the investigation just ends? They already have a lifelong Republican doing the investigation.

Except weren't there pictures of Franken doing the thing they said he did

The first picture showed him doing something arguably stupid, but didn't indisputably show what Tweeden claimed they did. She exaggerated the claim way beyond what the picture supported. Notably, she went silent once Franken called for an investigation of himself. She was blatantly trying to gin it up into being the same thing Moore was accused of (groping).

Her claim was quickly piled on by a right-wing blogger who thinks Bill O'Reilly's firing was a "scalping" and whose complaint amounted to "one time he was kind of a jerk about making sure I knew I'd lost an argument with him".

The other pictures simply proved the women had in fact taken a picture with him.

This whole idea that Republicans will weaponize assault allegations  reminds me of that gif about climate change with the guy saying “What if it’s a big hoax and we create a better world for nothing?”

Sure, ok, the republicans will try to weaponize this sort of accusation. In most cases they will fail laughably, just as their attempts to gin up an accusation against Mueller are failing. Occasionally their efforts will focus on someone like Al Franken, where the accusation perhaps could have some legitimacy. And in that case, perhaps their efforts will pay off. And in doing so, they’ll slowly be creating a world where sexual harassment is treated more seriously.
