I had some fun with the game. It's a cool sandbox-style exploration game with some incredible vistas. The main problem is that after you've explored 10-20 systems, you've seen the entire game. There is a "story" you can follow, but it's pretty weak.

I don't know how the game could be improved. The issue with game design is that the larger (and more procedurally-generated) the world is, the less tight the core of the game is. Some people really like this, but other people want a more well-defined game, goal, or narrative.

Is this game still getting shit on? Those folks need to let it go. It’s a good product now and they’re continually making it better.

It’s getting shit on because it’s not a good game. Never was and isn’t. 🤷‍♀️

Is this the "Almost three years after dropping $60 on a tech demo, you can kind of play an actual game, aren't you excited!?" announcement or was that a year ago making the waiting period for paying full price to actually playing only two years total?

That was a the update from last year, on which they continued to improve. It's a solid game at this point. I sunk a bunch of time into and played online with my friend.

That's also what makes the "No Man's Sky Online" moniker a bit interesting, because it actually had pretty decent online support as of the update last year. I do think it could benefit from pushing even harder online though, so I guess that's what they're doing? In particular, I would really like true shared bases. Right now, a base must be owned by one individual and if it's not you, you can only edit it if they're online. Simply changing that would be nice.

I'd also be interested if they come up with ways to have more interesting conflicts with other players, thereby allowing for large clans across the galaxy to meaningfully form.

This patch is crazy big. I plan on trying it later today.

Some highlights from a huge list of great stuff you can find here:

https://www.nomanssky.com/beyond-update/

  • 32 player multiplayer
  • VR support (I may need to get desktop VR for this!)
  • Central hub to meet people
  • Organic encounters with other players in the same location is no longer only seeing an orb of them, you now get their entire avatar & ship present
  • The hub lets you easily go to other player's bases and curated bases that are on highlight
  • You can now carry a nearly unlimited amount of any resource (cut down on that damn resource management!)
  • You can set up power generates in your bases to keep your miners continually mining

I'm glad they've stayed dedicated to the game, but I hope they learn next time to be dedicated to the game BEFORE it comes out, and if something fucks up, not to go radio silent and ignore the fans they disappointed for months on end. It's great they turned it around --not many do-- but I'd rather them come out strong rather than limp along to finally getting strong 2 years later next time around.

The simple act of flying off the surface of a planet and landing on another is amazing, but the problem that I've had with No Man's Sky is that the resource gathering and building is boring and uneventful.  I understand why some people might like it, but I don't have the compulsion to build bases or colonies or interact with the game's systems.  Outer Wilds proves, for me at least, that the "endless" nature of games like this has significantly less appeal than carefully crafted and meaningful experiences.

Yeah, Outer Wilds is definitely the space exploration game I've always wanted.
