See my last post as to why you can't :p

That's the logical explanation, yes, but in my case it's simply having better shit to worry about. Sorry bodega dude that I can't tell the difference, next time you can tell the difference between me and an Austrian guy, I'll get right on that.

Sounds like there's a story there. Was bodega guy upset about it?

In a friendly way. We've known each other for years and years. Don't know if they have bodegas wherever you live but you run in there like every few hours it seems.

It was him, his two brothers and his son who all run the place together and I thought I overheard someone mention Pakistan once before so to shoot the shit I asked where in Pakistan they were all from originally. The fucking record scratch moment happened and he literally wagged his finger at me violently going "no no no no no!!!!" with his brother in the background sighing dramatically and throwing his hands up. I thought it was funny and started laughing at the whole situation until I explained I have no clue how to tell the difference and said my sorrys. Turns out they're Indian, yes.

Alas, we're all New Yorkers and nobody gives a shit five seconds later even if it wouldn't been an actual offense, which it wasn't anyway. Nobody in my old neighborhood was American.

I'm from Philadelphia and have been to NYC a crazy number of times so I'm very familiar with bodegas. I follow you heh. :)

Yeah, the whole Indian/Pakistan thing is mostly for shits and giggles in America. I get along with Indians just fine and they get along with Pakistanis just fine. Now, when you go over to South Asia, that's a different story . . .

Glad they didn't get genuinely upset. I agree with you that any Indian or Pakistani getting upset with someone not being able to tell the difference is stupid. There are clear differences, but you'd have to be aware of them - any Indian or Pakistani should know that (but many don't, I grant, hence why they aren't as understanding as they should be). :p

Yeah no, NYC is such a melting pot with nobody knowing each others' cultures anyway. Trying to cause a scene there over something like that wouldn't fly unless it's some serious business. I had one fellow German neighbor growing up and he had a total meltdown in the Russian grocery store across the street because they were always trying to short-change him for being German, I had to console him outside haha.
