External drive for xbox question

okay so some of you may remember a couple of weeks back I complained that the external drive I was using on my xbox stopped working. It was a Seagate. I just upgraded to an xbox 1 X and picked up a new hard drive, this time I went with a WD My Passport, pretty much the same one I have for my ps4. The odd thing is that when I shut down my xbox the light on the external drive keeps blinking. My Seagate never did that and the WD I have hooked up to my ps4 doesn't do that. I've tried both power settings on the xbox including making sure the external storage off box is checked for the instant on sleep mode. Does this happen for anyone else? Is it normal or is it something I need to worry about, like maybe just unplugging the drive every time I'm not using my xbox. I've tried searching online and can't seem to find out is this normal or not. Thanks

with you I can never tell if you are being serious or just jerking me around :p so why would it stay on for the xbox but not the ps4? Seems odd, also seems odd that the Seagate one never blinked when the xbox was off.  All I can say is that if this is normal then thank god I don't keep my xbox in my bedroom that flashing light all night would drive me crazy.

hm, did you check the queue? It just would make sense since you upgraded to an X and it should be updating your games.

Don't have the system set for auto updating, but even so queue is empty, and of course it's brand new system and external drive so I only have three or four games installed and I updated them earlier today.

As others have said, it's normal as the HDD is in its standby mode, however, I would recommend grabbing a USB 3.0 dock and using a 7200+rpm internal 3.5" drive. Your load speeds will be greatly increased over the (generally) super slow external drives like the WD passport, plus, internal HDDs are fairly cheap and you can keep multiple to pop-in and pop-out of the dock. :sun:

WD's have the LED blink when in standby. Its stupid but all my WD MyBooks do the same thing..

The reason your PS4 doesnt do it is because the ps4's USB's dont get power when the system is off. The XBO supplies power to the usb 24/7. I use my xbox to charge my phone all the time.

that makes sense, and yet the blinking is random, slow blink slow blink stay on for 5 or six seconds couple of quick blinks and then back to slow blink

Honestly, it's just horny. Put some porn on the sucker and it'll calm right down.

any suggestions for a cheap dock?

drives aren't that cheap. I paid less than a hundred for my 4Tb external, though I do like the idea of having a doc I can use for my computer and laptop

That 4tb external is 5400rpm laptop drive, using the dock with a high-cache 7200rpm drive will offer transfer speeds over 33% faster. You can’t really compare the price of the WD Passport/Elements external hdd to a 7200rpm internal: you’d need to compare it to 7200rpm external drive.

This is too technical for ED. What he has is enough for someone who won't be able to tell the difference.

Keyser is partially right, but that doesn't mean I still might not do it. I like the idea of faster load times, not to mention I like the idea of having a dock so I can use it on my laptop and desktop, especially since I have several older hard drives I'd like to be able to easily access.  What drive do you recommend.

That depends entirely on how much you want to spend :sun:

A Toshiba X300 128mb cache 7200rpm or Seagate Barracuda 256mb cache 7200rpm are probably the best bang for your buck. Next would be Western Digital 7200rpm Black or Blue series. I’m not sure if an SSHD (hybrid SSD HDD) would be worth the extra money over a 7200rpm drive as I’d imagine the bandwidth of USB 3.0 would give diminished returns on the potential speed difference. 10,000rpm drives are also available but :money:

Also, the dock is not complicated at all, you plug the dock into the USB 3.0 port of your Xbone and into an AC outlet, stick an HDD in, and you’re done! :santasun:

I can tell you it is normal. I bought a white External WD My passport 3.0 awhile back for my white ps4pro and when it's off no light! Yesterday I bought a Black 4TB WD My Passport External HD so same as the white one, though for the Xbox X and yea, the light stays on / blinks even when completely shut down. No worries bud! did think it was a pretty good deal, as the 2 gig is 89.99 and the one I bought { 4TB } was just 9.99 more. I know they go on sale often but, this is all I'll need as long as it lasts!  I like that they match the consoles look well and are not very big, nice little needed IMHO accessories I believe!
