I was a huge fan of Ninja Gaiden on NES but I no longer enjoy 2-D side scrolling games.

Imo making games like this is a cop out from developers.

And?

It's like saying people who paint buildings red are cop outs. So someone who owns a building wants the building painted red and gets red painting experts to paint the building. Is it a cop out to get the best person to do the job you want?

I mean either this dev can make a living doing what they do best or go out of business because making a 2d game is a cop out. 🤷 (or worse make some horrible 3D mess of a game)

You don't happen to work for the game kitchen do you? :p

It's just my opinion. If this was 1988 I'd be hyped af.

I would love it if I was.

I think you're discounting the skill involved in making pixel art, especially the type they do. This is like a lost art so to do something like this is quite impressive.

I think your current mindset, well maybe not yours in particular, is thinking we have moved past Nintendo pixels, which I think a lot of people got tired of that kind of pixel art. This is way beyond that though. Aesthetically pleasing, animated fluidly. This is the kind of art I tip my hat to.

Plus calling this kind of art a "cop out" is a slap in the face to your fellow Pennsylvanian @MarSolo who graciously made a stepee bear. :nottalking:

I understand where you are coming from. And I'm not trying to discredit the talent in making these types of games. The more variety and options in games is always a good thing. I'm just not a into this type of art direction.

Thanks!

Took a break from game designing to do some holiday art, finished those two pieces from Die Hard, now moving on to something from Bad Santa, Scrooged, and the Night Before.

Do you sell your work? It's on a professional level and that die hard piece on the glass would sell like hotcakes.

I will be ALL. OVER. THIS. I've always had a soft spot for Ninja Gaiden and side scrollers and these 2 genres absolutely lend themselves to one another. The 3D games were good then they got okay then they got bad IMO so I love to see this go back to it's roots. And the music in that trailer was excellent, another staple of the Ninja Gaidens on the NES

The combat looks very intense, and this is one of the rare games, along with Sea of Stars, that falls under my "pixel art that is inspired by the past aesthetic, not a slave to the limits of the time" label.

I agree. I shouldn't have said what I said earlier in this thread.

If I wanted to play a pixelated side scroller I’d play the original. Dumb.

Can't have that opinion around here.

Those old games are a fucking nightmare to play these days. I vastly prefer a retro-style game with modern design sensibilities.

I agree with this. It's crazy how difficult NES games were to control.
