I just saw the trailer in my recommended. So it IS co-op??

I might need more details but this could make me very happy. My sister and I were just talking last night how we both wish Elden Ring had proper co-op.

Yes, it is co-op.

The world of ELDEN RING™ is getting a standalone multiplayer co-op action survival game that challenges players to band together in order to defeat the Nightlord.

Developed by FromSoftware, Inc. and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc., the upcoming game, ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN will thrust players into co-op multiplayer PVE combat against a harsh and unforgiving world.

Teaming up in squads of three – or daring to go solo – they must outlast a three day-and-night cycle, making split decisions about combat and exploration across changing maps to become strong enough to take down terrifying bosses at the end of each day.

We played the new Elden Ring spin-off and talked with FromSoftware about what to expect from the 2025 game.

Playing Nightreign reminded me that in the '90s Capcom balked at the sudden popularity of bootleg, hacked versions of Street Fighter 2 arcade machines that sped up the combat and added wild special moves like mid-air fireballs… until they went out and played them. Then they knew there was clearly no going back. Precision game balance be damned, the speed was just too much fun. Their resulting official upgrade kit Street Fighter 2 Turbo: Hyper Fighting—literally a mod!—set the pace for every iteration of Street Fighter that followed.

Nightreign is Elden Ring Turbo, a condensed three-player roguelike with a lil' dash of Monster Hunter to it, as you choose a final boss to face at the end of each 30-ish minute run. That's assuming you survive two "days" of the circle shrinking to a focal point somewhere in alt-Limgrave, each night culminating in its own tough boss battle. When I started my first session by dropping onto the map from a spectral bird, the entrance was so Fortnite-coded I wondered if FromSoftware was joining the live service party with a battle pass, seasonal events and $20 epic skins.

This is a big wait-and-see.

Yeah I haven't seen anything on this before just now and yeah it's a big wait and see. I mean I'll give it a shot but I don't know I didn't even finish Elden ring!

This got me pretty good. I know you really dislike how Elden Ring controls. 😄

Pretty sure there is a good PC mod to play Elden Ring co-op.

the actual problem is hackers

"""hackers""" can already ruin your entire play-thru if they invade you or if you summon them

and then you can get banned from their online services because hackers gave you illegal souls/runes/items

well, this is only a problem if there is random matchmaking

doesn’t this disable torrent and leave you open to being invaded all the time?

No the mod is pretty robust now, although there are quirks as game crashes are more likely to happen and lag isn't always the best.

 might still be worth it. I will see when I can next get Elden Ring on sale on steam.

I never even got to play the dlc this year. I also don't see this working so great online. Especially since my connection is basically 56k. I have no faith in this nor do I even want to play it.

The Elden Ring roguelike spin-off is out sometime in 2025, but as usual you'll get to try it before release.

It lines up with prior FromSoft network tests, but I'm still bummed.

Elden Ring's co-op focused spinoff, Nightreign, is set to release sometime in 2025, but thanks to Nightreign's official website, we now know that its pre-launch network test will be held in February. The bad news is that it looks like this test will only be accessible on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles.

On the official Bandai Namco webpage for the Nightreign network test, there's an announcement that the limited-access playable build will be made available in February, with registration for it opening up on January 10. So far, so good, but then we get to the killshot: PS5 and Xbox Series logos, with nary a Steam or Epic badge in sight.

To be honest, I was hopeful but far from confident that we might be able to access the Nightreign network test on PC. FromSoft's previous network tests for its games have all skipped PC, with the 2013 run for Dark Souls 2 occurring before a full launch that was delayed on PC vs. consoles anyway. Despite having simultaneous full launches on PC, Dark Souls 3's network test was exclusive to PS4, while Elden Ring's 2021 test was exclusive to consoles. It also probably wouldn't surprise you to learn that the PS4-exclusive Bloodborne had a PS4-exclusive network test.
