LTTP: Super Mario Galaxy

I got Super Mario 3D All-Stars a while ago but hadn't played Galaxy yet. However, after having a BLAST with Astro Bot, it got me in a platformer mood, and I heard positive comparisons to Galaxy.

First thing's first: you know what the most memorable thing for me has been? Not a gameplay mechanic, not a level, no. I go to that GIant Eel galaxy, and three penguins are like, 'omg the giant eels!' 'Can you get rid of the eels!' 'Can you use a shell to hit the eels!' And I see another small penguin, so I figure they'll give me a hint, too, right?

"Grandpa's getting old."

Out of the gate, some of the music slaps as Astro does. Good Egg Galaxy's an obvious one; while most of the song seems like buildup, what it builds up to is beautiful starting at :56

It follows the same format I'm used to for the 3D Marios up to 2007 (and I think Odyssey was similar?), where the same level is changed up when you try to find a different star. It plays with gravity a lot where you're able to walk on the top and bottom of a 3D object, or change the flow of gravity in a level.

But I do have to say: while many of the ideas are good, sometimes the camera is killing me and I have no idea how to jump on an enemy while going upside-down.

I like the secret stars a lot. I felt special, even though millions of gamers did it before me, when I found a star that wasn't the main star to find in a level variation.

I'm not sure about the comets, though... I mean, I've beaten them all, but FUCK, it's stressful, particularly the time-based ones. UGH, I hate being timed. I did like the idea of fast-paced enemies, though!

I'm in the middle of the 3rd galaxy right now, for context.

Kinda, it feels pretty different to me when the worlds aren't generally open level.  Just one guided path vs another typically.

Camera is something they did better in Galaxy 2 generally as well.

Yeah, what struck me about Galaxy 2 was that they finally made a 3D Mario where the camera didn't piss me off.

It was more competitive in 07 so it might not be fair, but what was your best game of 07?

Metroid Prime 3 for me.  I think that game is unjustly overlooked, especially in the year it released.  Skytown and Pirate Homeworld are at the very least in the top 5 zones in the entire series, 2D or 3D.

I'd pick Bioshock and Mass Effect over Mario Galaxy in 07.

I’d have picked Mass Effect as my favorite game of 07, by far.

Discerning gamers know it's Portal.

oooo, maybe I spoke too soon. Hmm. I’m gonna cheat, Mass Effect is my favorite game over 5 hours of 07. ;) Nailed it!
