crispy4000
How many players does a game like Concord need to survive? WWW.GAMESINDUSTRY.BIZ Last night's news that Sony is pulling the plug, perhaps temporarily, on its new live service hero shooter Concord will… Quote With free-to-play games, for example, he estimates that at least 5% of the total userbase need to be spending in order to maintain costs (although this can of course vary from title to title). This means the number of CCUs needed to be economically viable might be closer to 50,000 or more for some free-to-play titles, which Bala describes as "a big barrier to entry for most new games." Quote "Personally, I think for there to be an explosion of innovation in the PvP area, we need to find more routes to experiences that players would pay for up front," he says. "Otherwise, that segment of the market will look more and more like mobile titles, where monetisation and paywalls often take the place of compelling emotional experiences." Take from the head of Velan Studios, the Knockout City dev.
Commissar SFLUFAN
Yeeeaaaahhhh...Concord ain't coming back as an F2P title. It's gonna be a tax write off of its remaining unamortized development costs.
Bacon
Except for maybe the top 10%, I'd say you'd need at least 500 players per "shift" across all skill levels. Like, 5,600 active players a day across all ranks.
crispy4000
Chasing F2P is truly is fool’s gold today. Either you’re an established player in the space already or make a meme-worthy game that strikes it big. There was some opportunity for a time with battle royales, but it’s tapped now. Keyser_Soze
In order to succeed you need to be the trendsetter not the trend chaser. PUBG, Fortnite, H1Z1 were the first out of the gate. Apex Legends and Naraka Bladepoint managed to put an interesting twist on it. Warzone managed to sneak in there but anyone else after that failed. Hyper Scape, Radical Heights, Battlefield mode, you name it got shut down. Then the trends shifted to hero shooters, Team Fortress, Overwatch, Quake Champions, Valorant, Rainbow Six Siege. That marvel game has a chance because marvel. But we're reaching a saturation point / fatigue. For something like Concord to start development when things were hot by the time it came out it was too late. It was time to shift focus, maybe turn it into something else.
crispy4000
It’s not like the hero shooter trend was easily capitalized on. I brought up Battleborn earlier. That and the MOBA shooter became a crowded space for a time, and most people just stuck with Overwatch or even just TF2 at the time.

WB doing it with movies too.
