They actually arrive a few days before the riots start. :nerd:

Keep your eyes open for a guy in a funny costume who looks like a young Avery Brooks though.

LOL, Star Trek's version of San Fransisco in 2024 looks like it takes place in the imagination of modern day Fox News viewer...

I remember reading the wiki entry on that episode and saw this:

Determined to make Downtown Los Angeles friendlier to business, the Riordan Administration has launched a plan to shuttle homeless people to an urban campground on a fenced lot in the city's core industrial area.

IRL the local government was considering doing something very much like the sanctuary district.

And the wild thing is this didn't come out until right as they were wrapping up production on the episode, so it had no influence on the episode.

There was a Santa Monica connection too:

Most notably, “Past Tense” reveals an extremely rigid caste system built atop race and class, a real-world problem that has taken on incredible urgency in recent years. Yet the impetus for its story, according to Wolfe, was the large unhoused population in Santa Monica, California, more than two decades ago.

“We weren’t being predictive. We were just looking out our windows in the ’90s,” Wolfe says. “My wife worked with homeless and mentally ill people as a psychotherapist. Ira [Steven Behr] said what convinced him to do the episodes was walking through Palisades Park in Santa Monica and seeing all the homeless people there. They’re still there. It hasn’t changed. We weren’t being predictive. We were just being observant.”

Indeed it is, for me recent events like seeing the California National Guard being deployed throughout Los Angeles brought this episode to mind.
