Bugs, mold and mildew found in Boar's Head plant linked to deadly listeria outbreak

Gotta love the FDA & USDA both not knowing their jobs nor whom covers what.

It's absurd such a giant hole in our food security exists. In recent memory, the piece that John Oliver did was solid and mostly thorough for more current issues. That said, he left a lot unsaid as well, I hope he circles back around to such an important & dire issue that needs serious overhaul and restructuring.

A lot of it has to do with how badly they’re underfunded and not having anywhere near enough inspectors to stop these issues.

I honestly don’t expect Dietz, Blackbear, or other large suppliers to be much better at this point given the state of the FDA and other regulatory organizations tbh. I try to get the “cooked in store” ones lately when buying lunch meat, but that also means I’m limited to turkey, sometimes chicken, roast beef, and/or london broil. Thankfully I don’t buy lunch meat too much :p

Records released by the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service to CBS News through a Freedom of Information Act request tally 69 records of "noncompliances" flagged by the agency over the past year at the Jarratt plant.

It's unclear whether Boar's Head will face any penalties by the USDA for the repeat issues. Reports published by the agency so far show no "enforcement actions" taken against the company in the past year. A USDA spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Cool cool cool.
