Is Gamepass worth $20 Month

Recommended Posts

I’ll give this a watch a little later.

But off the cuff, there’s no reason to sub to Games Pass at $20 for indies that you wouldn’t play day one. It can take a couple weeks or months before they end up in a PC bundle or given away by Epic/Amazon.  There are exceptions that take longer, but the notable ones almost all end up there eventually.

Day one MS games or big 3rd party games I understand better to dip in and out of a subscription for.  But I still dislike having to pay continually for access.

If you are on ultimate and you have a kid or two that uses it as well, I find the value to still be there at $20 a month.

Between myself, my wife, and son us it so I think the value has still been there for me at 20 a month, but much more I might have to re-think it.

Considering a combo meal at any fast food restaurant usually runs almost $20, for something I'll eat once and poop out, paying that much once a month for a gaming service I use daily ain't that bad.

You live in New York City or something?  It's like $10-12 where I'm from.  Food really should be thought of as separate thing in your budget regardless, even fast food, IMO.

It'd be better to compare the $20 a month to the amount you'd spend on games otherwise.  $240 can go pretty far if you buy stuff on discount.  Not as much on console as the Games Pass library could, but you own and only spend money specifically on what you want.

Probably also best to pause the subscription temporarily if you get engrossed in a long game off-service.  Letting Games Pass 'collect dust' is pissing money away.  Same as any other lesser used entertainment subscription.

I'm still curious to see how indies factor into the day one releases.  It might make more sense to downgrade, then pop back up for the 1st party stuff.

... Well, if you play single player stuff mainly.

Maybe. It is a lot of games. For new Xbox owners it seems like a no brainer, at least for a bit. It is less of a good deal if you buy most of your games and that is a lot of what they have added. But in some cases it just depends on how immediately you want to play stuff.

the PC tag on this thread is a bit misleading as PC only Game Pass is like $10. Which is definitely a better deal.

To actually pay that probably not. Back before they nuked the rewards program I was getting it for free and still have it stacked until like July 2026, though I've stopped bothering with Rewards

It's not nuked though you can still do it. :p

I question anyone not gaming the system because it’s been so obvious for so long

It is such an easy one too. Like, maybe 10 minutes of effort and $120 up front to go 3 years without thinking about GP ultimate.

Yeah, I discover great games on it all the time. I just put about 30-40 hours in Brotato, which is basically a Vampire Survivor clone, but better.

I mean, as someone who put almost 80 hours in that game on SD (TBF, I probably only put 65, my daughter the rest).  It was well worth the C$4.50 I spent on it.

It’s not quite so easy apparently because I did it for my step dad for his birthday and he needed my mom to help!

But yeah it’s super fucking easy lol

I’m out of the loop apparently. I knew at one point the trick was to stack up years of Live and then convert them to Game Pass for $1. What’s the deal now, and can existing subscribers do it?

Well, my Ultimate subscription was set to renew tomorrow. Guess I’ll fuck around and find out…

Let it lapse for 24 hours and you should be good to stack the gold and then convert to GPU

Simple answer... it is from time to time. Most of the time no.

To clarify, if you are new to xbox/pc and have not played a significant number of games I believe you'll see a lot of value. The same was true of me for PS Plus extra. The first year I had access to a bunch of things I never played before. I played the ones I wanted to and then found that I was paying for the very occasional game that I wanted to play that got added.

Game pass is that way too, with the caveat that the do add new release games... and for those I wait for several to be added to the service and I sign up for a month or two to play them and then unsubscribe again. I still prefer to purchase any game that I see myself playing through more than once.

Not that this is earthshattering news:

Some games coming to Game Pass Ultimate (day one games or other game entries) will not be immediately available with Game Pass Standard and may be added to the library at a future date (can be up to 12 months or more and will vary by title). We’ll continue to share with all Game Pass members when games are being added and available to play for each plan.

Hey Insiders, let’s talk Game Pass! Starting today, we’re offering Xbox Insiders the option to try out and provide feedback on our new membership, Xbox Game Pass Standard. We created a new membership option in the Game Pass family to give players more choice in how they discover and play games and provide different prices […]

I think we can expect most AAA releases to go at least 12 months before making it to standard.
