Question: Windows sucks and doesn't work with passkey logins in any browser; what gives?

Recommended Posts

I've been trying to set up passkey logins on my services where the passkey is on my phone. I just set that up with Amazon. If I then try to login with passkey from a web browser my mac or any linux system, it works exactly as it should: the website displays a QR code that I scan with my phone and I'm logged in.

On my windows machine? Not so much. Regardless of which web browser I use (Chrome, Firefox, Edge), Windows just can't help but get involved. As soon as I choose passkey to login, a get a Windows security dialog saying "Making sure it's you" with no options. I can only cancel. After canceling, amazon says something went wrong with my device.

I've tried disabling my pin code for hello windows and turning off windows hello support in chrome. No dice. At one point, the dialog did ask me to insert a usb key instead of... literally no options. So something with windows security is related, but I suppose that much was already obvious. I also tried having MS support help me. That did not go well. It ended with them having me do a windows in place repair, which I expected to do nothing and sure enough, did nothing.

I know some of you do IT with windows so maybe you have better insight into this horrifying operating system that I restrict to gaming and media for said horrible reasons.
