TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: Walled In (August 9) - Official Trailer for the most bad-ass movie of 2024

Recommended Posts

Been looking forward to this one. The director Soi Cheang is responsible for the underrated Kill Zone 2 with Tony Jaa (not technically a sequel to the excellent Donnie Yen movie Kill Zone but using the brand) and the very dark and intense cop movie Limbo. Should be really good.

I couldn't tell what to make of that from the trailer. Over the top comedy Kung-Fu like Shaolin Soccer but with a serious tone? 2 hour adrenaline rush but silly slapstick action that's meant to be serious?  I'll probably check it out at some point but that trailer was a bit confusing.

Action looked cool, but I got the same Kung Fu Hustle/Shaolin Soccer feel with the action. Still probably check out eventually

Pretty much what most Hong Kong martial arts flicks were in the 90's and early 2000's. That's why the trailer was both nostalgic and a bit dated for me personally. I watched the HELL out of movies like this back in the day but this just seems like those movies with a shiny coat of CG. I'll checked it out at some point though, but it didn't hit me the same way trailers for Ong Bak and The Raid did when they came out. Those movies legit seemed like they were moving the martial arts action genre forward. This seems like a well made homage to what came before.

I watched this over the weekend and I was pretty hype for it but ultimately this wasn't that great. It wasn't bad but despite one great surprise the plot is relatively boring and ridiculous and the villains have more scenes and are more humanized than the heroes. The hero also gets captured a number of times and the villains never kill him (using a poor excuse of "we can use him") and the action is never as inventive as it should be given the strong premise and setting. The action isn't as slick or choreographed as something like John Wick or The Raid, but it's also not gritty or grounded enough either. It's in this strange limbo between the two. I liked aspects of the movie but the film meandered way too much, recycling the same plot beats over and over. I was inclined to give it a 6/10 but there was some solid action in there so a 6.5/10. The movie just doesn't hit as hard as it should have with the action and the train setting seems to limit the action rather than make it more inventive. I'm baffled by the insanely high scores for this film on both RT and IMDb. It doesn't just seem like South Asians caping for the film but I've seen a lot of action and martial arts films and while this was well made I was mostly irritated by the characters' decisions and bored.

So I did watch Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In (not a sequel, not connected to anything) now that its available online and this was really good! A good to great 7.5/10. The film actually takes time to tell a story and really create a powerful setting - the walled city of Kowloon, Hong Kong in the 1980's is an incredible piece of set design throughout the entire film, they did an incredible job on that front. And the fights do not disappoint - everything I wanted Kill to be this actually was, from really dynamic and diverse choregraphed fights that at times were hard hitting and then a bit fantastical at other times. Acting was solid across the board, and it was great to see Sammo Hung still around after all this time. The movie isn't perfect, it drops one plotline after taking some time to establish it and the friendship group dynamic is overwrought but I had a great time with this one, check it out.

@Greatonesherewould you say it's worth the $5 rental? I feel like with Monkey Man & Kill, this too will be on a streaming service sooner than later.

I felt this was better than those two movies, I think it's worth a $5 rental but I think it'd also be totally fine to wait until it's on streaming. But I enjoyed this more than those two movies.
