Beyond Good & Evil - 20th Anniversary Edition (Up to 4K 60 fps) Available on ALL Platforms June 25

Anyway BGE2 was my most anticipated game for a very very very long time. But with Ancel gone..and the reason why he’s gone so we don’t want him back idk. Seems like it doesn’t matter anymore. So this might be the best thing fans can get from it.

Will they finally release a version where the inverted controls aren’t completely fucked?  What round mouth decided that inverted controls meant to invert both axes all the time?

I hope so!

I know I’m already in the minority by always inverting the Y axis at all times but is there anyone out there who actually inverts the X axis?  Who is this for?

I’ve wondered this too lol. It doesn’t make sense in the same way Y does.

It was an early 3D camera thing that several games used. It went away fairly quickly as the default, but most games have kept the option since.

I guess I got used to the reverse x axis when the game first came out, since I invert Y, but I don't think I can do it anymore. I tried replaying the game several years ago and couldn't do it. I really hope they have it separated now.

3D games with camera controls are literally unplayable for me if I can’t invert Y axis, and if X axis is inverted. Thankfully the option to invert Y axis became a standard in 3D games fairly quickly, and X axis inversion stopped being the default after the early days of 3D gaming. Every 3D game with camera controls should have the option to invert both.

While rare, there are still some 3D games that come out now that don’t offer the option to invert Y axis. They’re usually indie games, but that’s still no excuse to exclude one of the most common options in games.

I also don’t understand how a game company can release a remaster of an old 3D game without updating the camera control options for it. The Jak and Daxter remaster for PS4 has inverted X axis camera controls, and there’s no option to change them making the game unplayable for me.

As much as I’m interested in the Beyond Good & Evil remaster, I won’t be getting it if X axis is inverted and there’s no option to change it.

I found an old reddit post that says if you go to Graphic Options, hold up and click R3 it will invert the camera. Did you ever try that?

Previously I was going to say that back then (as far as the PS3 version goes) remaster was a marketing term that sounded better than port, which is what it is and why they likely didn't change much except a frame rate and resolution bump. Also from what I gather whatever the PS4 version is is ported from the PS2 not the PS3 remaster. In any case it doesn't sound like they put much effort into them which is why it likely lacks QOL features like that.

Although it doesn't help you I would wager that decompilation that got released does have the option in there. 🤔

No, I didn’t know about that. Thanks for telling me, because I have all three Jak games on PS4 and I’ve been wanting to play them but not being able to play the first one due to it having inverted X axis camera controls made me lose interest in doing so.

Yeah, the PS4 version is just a port of the PS2 version and not a remaster like I originally said. But they still should have at least added the option to change the X axis camera controls.

Critic Reviews

Evilgamerz - Daan Nijboer - Dutch - 8 / 10

With the 20th Anniversary Edition, Ubisoft has clearly put more effort into it than just a graphical update. Some new missions have been added to unravel Jade's past, all as an introduction to Beyond Good & Evil 2. A speed-run mode has also been added to make the whole package even more complete. Despite its age, Beyond Good & Evil remains a worthwhile experience in 2024. Jade is still a great protagonist and the world of Hillys is unique to explore. The game focuses more on exploration than combat. Design, music and good writing together create an atmospheric experience where it doesn't really matter that the rest feels outdated. This remaster of Beyond Good & Evil is highly recommended for both new and old players. It is also refreshing to play a game where the gameplay is much more straightforward instead of all kinds of vague battle passes, microtransactions and difficult systems. For just €20 you can get this cult classic for modern systems, a no-brainer in our opinion. Let's hope that more information will follow soon about the successor.

GamingBolt - Shubhankar Parijat - 8 / 10

Beyond Good and Evil 20th Anniversary Edition is a great way to replay a beloved classic, and an even better one to experience it for the first time.

GamingTrend - David Flynn - 90 / 100

Beyond Good & Evil is an absolute classic, and the 20th Anniversary Edition makes it easier than ever to appreciate why. The characters are endearing, the visuals are mostly amazing, the music is incredible, and the gameplay is a ton of fun on top of all that. If this is your first time stepping into Jade's sneakers or your 20th, now has never been a better time to explore the beauty of Hillys.

God is a Geek - Mick Fraser - 9 / 10

Beyond Good & Evil - 20th Anniversary Edition is a great version of a genuinely wonderful game that truly does the original release justice.

Hobby Consolas - David Rodriguez - Spanish - 86 / 100

Beyond Good & Evil: 20th Anniversary Edition is a remaster that few asked for, but it offers good technical improvements, adds new content and brings us a little closer to Beyond Good & Evil 2. If you have never played it you should give it a try and if you did, it never hurts to enjoy it again if you are a fan of the saga.

Merlin'in Kazanı - Murat Olcan - Turkish - 78 / 100

It's true that the game has aged in many ways, but the positives far outweigh the negatives.

Nintendo Life - Oliver Reynolds - 8 / 10

Nintendo has been getting heat for the pricing of its recent Switch remasters, so to see Ubisoft's Beyond Good & Evil so lovingly restored for a reasonable price is a true joy. The 20th Anniversary Edition boasts some lovely visual and auditory upgrades, an excellent gallery feature, and a whole bunch of meaningful extras that make this journey back into Hillys well worth taking. Granted, the 30fps performance on Switch is a bit of a bummer compared to other platforms, and there's no denying that the experience has aged considerably in certain areas, but the gameplay is so varied, and the world so unique, that you'd be remiss not to at least give it a shot. Welcome back, 'Yade'.

PSX Brasil - Victor Vitório - Portuguese - 75 / 100

Beyond Good & Evil 20th Anniversary Edition is not only the definitive version of Jade's adventure, but an example of how remasters of games from that era can feature relevant improvements and add extras to celebrate the historical legacy of these works. Some more dragged aspects have not aged very well and remind us of the age of the game, but the charisma of the adventure and the good use of the opening of the compact world still make it deserve this well-cared for return.

Press Start - Kieron Verbrugge - 8 / 10

Beyond Good & Evil's 20th Anniversary Edition does a commendable job of freshening up an experience that had long aged out of its must-play status. Enhanced visuals that don't dull the original charm, welcome quality-of-life and control improvements and a nice smattering of extra content go a long way to making this a worthwhile revisit to Hillys.

Push Square - Ken Talbot - 8 / 10

A bona fide classic remastered with love and care. This edition brings smooth visuals, a beautifully recreated musical score, and well-presented supplemental materials. It certainly shows its age, but like all great art, Beyond Good & Evil weathers the test of time with grace.

TheSixthAxis - Steve C - 9 / 10

Beyond Good & Evil 20th Anniversary really is the best way to play this classic cult title, bringing it up to date in terms of controls, resolutions and more. The underlying game may show its age at times, especially during the enforced stealth sections, but there is so much charm and character here that it deserves a whole new audience.

WayTooManyGames - Heidi Hawes - 9 / 10

It’s clear that a lot of love and care has gone into Beyond Good & Evil – 20th Anniversary Edition. The graphics and soundtrack have had a full overhaul, and some much needed QoL improvements make the playing experience far more enjoyable. The inclusion of the treasure hunt that delves more into Jade’s past make me hopeful that we’ll finally get Beyond Good & Evil 2 someday, but I’ll temper my expectations until it’s confirmed.

I never played this game just because the controls were so stupid. Fellow inverter of Y here.
