Having a Tick Bite Sucks

Recommended Posts

Week and a half ago, I was bit (for the first time in my life) by a tick (American Dog tick) -- big motherfucker.

Looks fine for the first week.  Then, after a week, it clearly becomes infected.

If you're wondering, having an infected tick bite sucks.

Ticks are no joke. I feel like they are getting out of control in my area of Pennsylvania. The winters have been very mild the last few years and they aren’t dieing off like they used to. I see a billboard along the highway now giving a warning about them.

I’ve mentioned it here before but I dealt with knee swelling for almost 2 years before a simple blood test revealed Lyme was the cause. Dr looked at my most recent x ray and said there is an abnormal amount of arthritis showing from the Lyme. My son has a friend whose dad got bit by a tick a few years ago. I don’t remember the exact condition but it did permanent damage to his heart. I’m always putting bug spray on outside now.

Hope that leg clears up soon @AbsolutSurgen it looks rough!

I have had probably hundreds of tick bites in my life. Never once had any issue beyond the annoying itchiness for a bit. I'm pretty sure I got into some chiggers this week while hiking. Itchy legs.

Are you still a avid hunter?

The bite itself didn’t bother me. The infection does.

Bro make sure the antibiotic the doctor prescribed is the correct one. If that doesn’t show improvement soon I’d go back.

It's feeling better today, swelling is starting to reduce.

My wife made an outline with a sharpie to track it's size, and ensure the infection is reducing.

You're right.  A tick bite can be a harmless thing, where you just pull it off, and go on with your life.

Unfortunately, they also can spread a lot of infections.

I was fortunate in that I was bitten by a dog tick, which don't normally spread lyme disease.   Plus, they are so big that it was hard to miss when I got ready for bed that night.

I was a little unfortunate, in that I got the tick at a back-yard wake in a residential neighbourhood, where I was wearing pants.

I go to alot of doctors and one thing I know is they throw antibiotics at problems and hope something sticks. They don't wanna take the time to figure out which one will treat the problem the best.

They said to let the antibiotics work for 48 more hours.  The amount of "growth" was normal in the first 24-36 hours.  However, they gave us guidelines on what to look out for, that might require us to come back quickly.

Ok good. Last thing you want is for that infection to hit your bloodstream and cause sepsis.

We had a neighbour's son die at 24 because he didn't get a minor infection treated and caught sepsis.

My wife has reminded me of that ~5 times over the last 3 days.
