I’ve played Dragon Quest games for ever and I’ve always enjoyed them on handhelds. When it comes to grinding it’s a perfect device. Gameboy Advance/DS Lite/3DS/ and now Switch.

Tips.  
Explore everything. Look for anything that says interact. Talk to everyone and listen to what they say. Sometimes it’s important. Don’t hurry. Also immediately change battles to ultra-fast.

@Biggie Am I missing something with the combat? I'm not familiar with old school combat but I basically hit attack and that's basically it. My companions fight on their own and so far there is no strategy to it. 

 

What am I missing here? I did set it to ultra fast combat.

Also @Best you can change tactics for your party members. Such as follow orders/fight wisely/focus on healing/show no mercy/etc

Yea I have a party. I just completed a dungeon and did the objective. It looks beautiful and the music is sublime.

I found a couple of hidden things. Explored everything and talked to everyone. Visited all the shops and then recruited my teammates.

You might want to consider investing in a dock for your steam deck. For smaller low spec games like this they should scale up to a 4k tv with no problem. So if you think "this might look better on a TV" you could easily achieve that without buying the game twice.

@Biggie Playing this made me want to finish my Dragon Quest XI playthrough on my deck. 

 

So now I'm torn to continue with this or just finish my XI playthrough first.

I don't have a dock so I don't know how it displays but you can override any game to display at higher resolutions than the deck. So when I say "scale up" I actually mean you should be able to display it at native resolution on your TV.

I'm about 26 hours into XI. I loaded it up this morning and it's so fuckin similar to Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake.

 

It's essentially the same game at it's core but even better. 

 

I agree that this remake absolutely POPS on an OLED screen.

I played more today and it has some of the best music I've ever heard in a game. 

 

What I'm not enjoying is how combat works and how frequent battles happen in dungeons and the over world. 

 

Combat is extremely mundane with very little interaction. Having played XI last night it's leagues better in every way and improves on everything. Not having to fight in general is a massive step forward in XI. The combat in more interactive and enjoyable as well. 

 

So playing part 3 is just disappointing imo. I think I've really fucked up with my purchases.

I mean it’s Dragon Quest III from 1988 bro. It has a fresh coat of paint, improved soundtrack, and some voice acting but it’s essentially the same old school JRPG. Maybe get a refund? Sorry I feel like I misled you. I love it.

Oh this is entirely my fault. I am not sure I can get another refund because I already did it yesterday. 

 

I love everything about it except the combat and the frequency of combat. I keep trying to get my bearings in where to go next and then I just keep getting sucked into combat. 

 

It's beautiful and the soundtrack is stunning.

The overall map literally shows you with a blinking circle where you need to go to next and the objective is also written on the map screen. Also there is a potion called Holy Water that will ward off weaker enemies for a while so you can just walk around. I have like 10 of them in my item bag. They are easy to come buy.

No, I understand where I'm going in the over world. But last night I was in a dungeon trying to find this old man and no marker was on my map. So I had to find it on my own but it got really frustrating getting sucked into combat all the time.
