Tubi had more viewers than Disney+, Peacock, Max, and Paramount+ in May

With an average audience of 1 million viewers in May, the free streaming service is ramping up its original development slate.

It may not have the cultural cachet of its streaming rivals, but Tubi certainly has the viewers.

The free, ad-supported streaming service hit an average audience of 1 million viewers in May, its most-watched month ever and a 46 percent increase from a year prior, according to Nielsen data cited by the Los Angeles Times.

That million-viewer tally also means Tubi had a higher average May viewership than Disney+, Peacock, Max, and Paramount+, according to the Times. It also beat out other platforms in free, ad-supported streaming TV — or FAST, for short — like Roku Channel and Pluto TV.

Tubi’s win comes in an era of “streamflation,” as Netflix, Disney+, Max, and Peacock have raised prices and as Netflix and Prime Video have started showing ads on its platforms.

I admit to having never even tried Tubi. I'll have to give it a shot.

One of my favorite streamers is Pluto TV, which is also completely free and awesome. I bet there is a lot of overlap.

Pluto has awesome old random crap. They have 25/7 channels featuring... Star Trek, Doctor Who, Godzilla movies, Beavis and Butthead, Iron Chef, 80s Price is Right, etc...

It's great and free and you don't even need to have a login. It feels like dollar store cable.

I've always thought... if TV can make money on the air for free with ads, then it can make money on streaming with just ads... and I guess things like Tubi and Pluto prove that.

I'd pay for Pluto tbh. I like the reduced decision making required, I just have to pick if I want to watch DS9 or Stargate, not which specific episode to turn on. But the ads are suuuuuuuuper repetitive. uBlock Origin does kill the ads but the site breaks a lot with adblock enabled.

It's been clear for a while now that the FAST (free ad supported television) is going to eat a large part of the market.

I think it's clear why people prefer a free service, but I highly value the elimination of ads. I know that tiers without ads will continue to get more and more expensive as time goes on, but I hope don't dissapear entirely.

I also find a lot of comfort in putting on a TV channel and just watching what is on. It reminds me of s simpler time and there is something to be said for consuming content in that way. It's honestly one of the main draws for me. I want something on in the background? Star Trek TNG is always a safe bet. Which episode? Well, whatever they've got, that's the episode. Started it halfway through? Oh well, that's just how it is. Missed something? Oh well, that's just how it it is.

I know it's silly, but I find it compelling in a really weird way.

I just checked out Tubi... seems pretty decent, but I'll stick with Pluto TV.

I just binged the first three John Wick movies a few weeks ago on Tubi. I think there were maybe four or five commercial breaks? (per movie)

Pluto and Tubi are shaping up to be my go-to streaming services for background shit. Besides, any service that lets me run Baywatch in the background can't be all that bad.

Honestly the perfect description. Some good movies are on there, I think every episode of Jeopardy, etc., and it's free with ads. Cool!

Paying to remove ads makes absolutely no sense from the perspective of the content producers and I'm surprised that products with it have lasted as long as they have. Whatever relatively small upcharge hulu or whoever sets up to remove ads, it's always going to be more profitable to get paid by advertisers.

Also the numbers here kinda give away the game... Tubi beat out those other services with an average of 1M viewers? So... 10% of the people who tuned into an average NCIS episode last year? Or Young Sheldon's final season? Come on now.

Yeah, Tubi is good for older movies and honestly their commercials aren’t too bad compared to some services.

I’ll probably be altering how I consume (arrr) if everyone gets rid of plans with ads removed though. I’ll pay whatever to go ad free, but if there is no option then it’s back to free arrrrrr.

My sister is a big fan of pluto tv, where they can pick a channel like Transformers Gen 1 and it just plays random episodes. Layout is just like browsing channels on a cable/satellite box.

I wouldn’t mind if not for the ads. My sister us far more tolerant of ads than I am. Or I guess less willing to pay to remove them. My sister mutes the tv during ad breaks.

I will say that “free w/ ads” makes more sense than $10:month w/ ads. So I can’t blame people for choosing free services over other options. But I bet Tubi and Pluto become like everyone else eventually. They try maybe $3/month, which becomes $5/month, which later grows to $10/month, and eventually $15/month and you are still getting ads. They will fuck this up because companies are greedy.
