Nokra
Just curious if anyone here has completed any cool projects with any single board computers such as the Raspberry Pi, Arduino, Tinkerboard, etc. I've had a couple of Raspberry Pis over the years and besides setting one up as a VPN server at my parents' house while I was living abroad (to be able to access American content on e.g. Netflix), I feel like I've underutilized my puchases! Never one to learn from my mistakes , I recently bought a Raspberry Pi 5 and have a couple projects in mind already (e.g. an indoor air quality monitor, and a security camera) but was curious if others had any other cool projects they've completed to give me some additional ideas. Ricofoley
We have a Raspberry Pi (3rd generation I think) with KODI installed and hooked up to a hard drive with a bunch of stuff we've ripped from physical media over the years on it. Not that fancy of a project, but it comes in handy. Was thinking about buying a 5 soon to see if it speeds up the load times on it some. cusideabelincoln
16 hours ago, Air_Delivery said: Can that handle 4k video and transcoding? As a playback device the Pi 3 is limited to 1080p I think. As just a server it can handle delivering the files, but not with transcoding capabilities. I had one set up for my brother as a Plex server and it had trouble transcoding the audio portion if needed. Plex isn't a bad option for the Pi 3 since there's an app for just about every smart device, so all you need is a machine to hold the files for the app to communicate with. But if you want to transcode you need something beefier. I use a GTX 1060 for transcoding and it works well enough. HDR content can be tricky though.

FWIW, the newest Raspberry Pi, version 5, can handle 4k decoding at 60 Hz, as well as dual 4K@60Hz monitors. https://www.raspberrypi.com/products/raspberry-pi-5/
