New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez filed a petition Monday to get on the U.S. Senate ballot in the Garden State as an independent candidate. In a statement on Monday, Menendez said he submitted more than enough signatures to run and that he intends to continue doing his work as an "independent Democrat." Independent candidates need 800 signatures to get on the U.S. Senate general election ballot in New Jersey.

In a statement to ABC News, Rep. Andy Kim, who is running in the Democratic Senate primary and entered the race last fall in response to Menendez's indictment, wrote: "Americans are fed up with politicians putting their own personal benefit ahead of what's right for the country. Everyone knows Bob Menendez isn't running for the people of New Jersey, he's doing it for himself. It's beyond time for change and I'm stepping up to restore integrity back into the U.S. Senate."

I really, really hope that this doesn't siphon enough votes from Andy Kim in the general election to let the GOP candidate squeak by.

Literally the only reason he would run as an independent. He isn't a republican so running with a federal indictment isn't feasible as a result he must punish the democrats for being less corrupt (currently).

I personally don’t know anyone in NJ who actually likes Menendez as much as they don’t want a republican.  I assume if Andy Kim is on there under the D flag the amount of votes Menendez siphons off will be negligible.

Polling with a 3-way race shows Menendez at 7 percent, and he has massive name recognition, so I feel his base is quite limited. Democrats typically win by double digits in the Senate.

NJ produced Chris Christie. Just saying.
