Voting online sounds like a horrible, horrible idea

You have to pre-register and be approved to do it. Every "social security number" (CURP) is tried to a voting id number. It's not like DLs and purple thumbprints.

You cannot be approved or register for a INE/CURP for several months before an election for fraud prevention purposes.

You also get a printable proof of voting/unique serial that you did it, and you can use that serial to cross reference official records.

Also, to get your INE/CURP you must be a citizen. You have to provide your BC and your Mexican parents BC and they have to match official records. If they don't match you have to go before a judge and have the original records corrected. It takes months. But the INE and voting is a constitutional right and costs nothing, so if your paperwork is all clear it's easy. (Mine was not. 🥵)

On June 2, Mexicans will vote to pick their next president. The race is expected to see a woman take the top job for the first time.

  •  Claudia Sheinbaum

The 61-year-old Sheinbaum is a former Mexico City mayor and climate scientist. A longtime political ally of incumbent President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, she was the Mexico City environment secretary from 2000-2006 when he was mayor.

If she wins, Sheinbaum would be not only the first female president in Mexico, but the first president with Jewish heritage, although she rarely speaks publicly about her personal background and has governed as a secular leftist.

  •  Xóchitl Gálvez

Backed by an opposition coalition of Mexico’s PRI, PAN and PRD parties, Xóchitl Gálvez is a former senator and previously served as the top official for indigenous affairs under former President Vicente Fox.

The daughter of an indigenous father and a mixed-race mother, the 61-year-old was a businesswoman before entering politics.

She won in an absolute landslide (58% to 60% of the vote) and her coalition also appears to have captured a 2/3 majority in both legislative chambers.

I need to research more the institutions Morena is trying to eliminate with this majority.

I mean while Morena is clearly in cahoots with cartels, I just think it’s absolutely wholesome that they’re all about inclusion and DEI. In seriousness though, a Mexican dedazo is as classic Mexico as it comes.

Nah man. Calderon's war against the cartels was bad for everyone in the cross fire. It's not a solved issue but it's a massive improvement over what was happening before. The social programs are great, like the stipend for the elderly regardless of income level or working history and things like that are much needed relief in Mexico.

Conservatives are going on and on about how AMLO didn't and how Claudia won't engage in a war with the cartels. This is the kind of thinking American gun manufacturers want as they sell their weapons to the Cartels behind closed doors. More guns more bullets more money for corporations.

PRI and PAN failed the Mexican people, for a long long time. The only solution to the cartels are more social programs and opportunities so kids don't go into that "lifestyle." The gov has to offer something better.

I 100% agree that the solution against the cartels is a well organized set of policies to improve economic opportunities for everyone. However, keep in mind Morena is in the pockets of the cartels so it’s not like they aren’t around or aren’t in total control either:

Under Claudia Sheinbaum’s presidency, organised crime will likely be calling the shots.

Al Jazeera and she's Jewish tho.

The examples given have existed long before Morena was even a blip on the radar.

I agree that all those things are problems - but they have been for A LONG TIME. Since I was a kid we knew the military and cops were corrupt and you didn't go to them for help.

The expectation that one president, or now Claudia are supposed to solve dozens of years of issues, while the US Gov maintains policies that enrich cartels (including giving them weapons) isn't realistic - it doesn't mean that they are in the Cartel's pockets either. It's a long road to solve these issues.

(AND HONESTLY THE PEOPLE TO BLAME ARE THE SPANISH BECAUSE THEY CREATED THIS ISSUE WITH THE CASTE SYSTEM AND THE INQUISITION.)

As per posters on ResetERA:

- the dismantling of the Mexican judicial system (including the Supreme Court) in order for the judges to be elected by popular vote

- the elimination of independent regulators including the National Elections Institute

- the elimination of other public autonomous organizations that exposed acts of corruption
