Resident Evil 2 Remake | Official Thread of 20 Years of Jump Scares (mark spoilers, please!)

Noooo, the demo ended right when I got the shotgun. Thoughts:

-The starter gun wasn’t satisfying. Maybe it was the sound of it but it felt like a cap gun.  The damage it was doing to the zombies was impressive. Just seeing the layers come off was cool. Also would have liked a finisher type move like a foot stomp to the head.

-The sound wasn’t great. I remember playing 7 and holding my breath every time I heard a rattle. In the demo, the sound didn’t have the same oomph to me which is good since it allowed me to play it.

-The game looked good on the Pro for the most part. I encountered a few instances where the engine produced a too soft picture.

-knife durability seems like a weird choice. Was that in RE2?

-maybe it is my tv settings, but the dark areas didn’t seem that dark. I was ready to toggle off the flashlight to save the batteries.

It was disappointing. The button prompts over items is terrible and while I like the shooting mechanics , the super spongy zombies make them a chore . I would prefer to be rewarded with single head shot kills and super limited ammo, that would provide some tension.

The more it has been sinking in, the more the utterly stupid, gigantic button prompts on everything are turning me off majorly. They can't be turned off without also turning off the damn reticle...just fucking WHY?

Not sure if it helps but there is a decent chance to get a full head pop if you use the critical aim like I described on the last page just in case you weren't. The game does not explain this.

I never noticed the button prompts when the demo was back at E3, I mean they seem kinda low key. Have the gotten more obnoxious?

For reference this is the old demo:

It really removes you from actually searching for items.

I dont actually

Not that it matter but the screen grab is from a random youtube video

I didn't quote you. I wasn't laughing at you. It is a twitch thing. When the streamer doesn't know something or misses the obvious, chat says, "he doesn't know," with the emote lul, lulw, or some variant of the lul emote, the image I posted. Even if there is nothing to know, but the streamer is confused, they'll spam "he doesn't know" in chat.

In this case, I was saying "he doesn't know" in regard to Keyser not knowing and missing the youtube interface.

This is the reason. As soon as you enter a room and walk around this HUD vomit pops up around you. It consistently ripped me out of the moment with its jarring visual design and diminished any desire to actually explore rooms properly.

It's baffling they chose this hideously intrusive way to highlight items to begin with but it's offensive that you somehow can't turn it off without also removing the crucial reticle.

Like I said, this might seem nitpicky to some but it was a surprisingly big turn off to me while playing to the point I'm going to have to wait to hear if the final build has additional Options in this regard before buying.

Wow, I barely noticed or cared about the prompts. They were there in RE7 if I remembered correctly. But I never valued """""""""""""""""""exploring"""""""""""""""""""" rooms in Resident Evil anyway, as it usually meant they'd hide some key items somewhere obnoxious for no reason. That said, I am always for more options, and if it bothers someone, it should be a toggle!

I didn't notice the button pop prompts consciously but I guess in retrospect they were distracting.  Like I was no longer searching rooms for items,  but for prompts. Maybe they were there by default for the demo? Anywho I decided that while I'm probably get it eventually,  this gonna be a pass on day one. I still have Resident Evil 7 and The Evil Within 2 to play. Plus this demo didn't blow me away.

I noticed the button prompts but they didn’t bother me. I dunno the original RE had items that were always lit up by a little light so I don’t see how this is much different. Also I hated “exploring” in the original games as it just consisted of walking around a rook mashing “x/a” in the hopes you’d find something. It was stupid.

This is blowing my mind. First two RE games being 'explorable' is one the biggest draww to that formula for me, that's why this smart phone overlay looking button prompt nonsense is such a detriment for me.

You can break down any game action to just button push XYZ and make it sound boring, sure, but I enjoyed scouring rooms for items obscured by camera angles etc thoroughly. With the removal of that 'trick' where even shiny objects were often only viewable from a certain angle, I just don't see why they had to make that even less interesting by putting a giant overlay of symbols over the atmospheric visuals when you already have a fully rotating camera. I think they could've easily just made pickups more distinct colors that pop instead of relying on this. For example when walking up to the fountain in the main hall, before I even stood in front of it, a popup with an arrow came up and I couldn't even look at half the thing. It's just incredibly bizarre to me in a game that has always been about an immersive atmosphere.

The only thing I'm arguing is that there should at least be an OPTION to get rid of the training wheels. God Of War somehow won't let you disable those ugly giant X prompts either, yet you can customize every other damn thing possible. I don't care if people like it, hate exploring, whatever, just give me that very basic option in a modern AAA game with all other bells and whistles.

Loved the demo for the most part, hated the limited 30 minutes and the music which sucked. I hope they fix the 10-shots to the head bs, it's gonna be hard otherwise.

The demo did not explain this for some reason but if you hold still for a second, the reticle kind of zooms in into a narrow version with a dot in the middle. This is a critical shot. You can take down a zombie with three critical head shots like this and also have a decent chance of actually popping their heads completely with one bullet.

Like so:

I don't think the break down really applies here. Most of us literally just mashed the button to pick things up while we ran around the entire room. I certainly wasn't "searching" for items. Why would you? There was no downside to just spamming the pick up button, and it saved you the annoying frustration of something important being hidden in a weird spot just to pad out the play time.

If you guys think that's what it boils down to, knock yourselves out. I still want the option because to me you guys' assessment of what I consider exploration in old RE games isn't my experience. I didn't run around the perimeters of rooms and spam X and I replayed RE1 through 3 in the past few years.

All I asked for is an option, I'm not saying you guys shouldn't play that way.

There have been several titles I've bought in recent years that don't offer HUD customization for a hint/waymarker/whatever display and it's annoying me. It can't be that hard to give people the option who don't want that.

I already said I support the option, I just don't personally think RE ever offered very compelling exploration. I feel like they intentionally made some things super obtuse because they knew their games were like 2 hours long.

I keep picturing @skillzdadirecta as that kid in the back trash talking in a schoolyard argument with his stupid upvotes

Whoa... slow down there partner. I upvoted what he said because I agreed with it, not as a knock to you. He was making the case for me and there was nothing else for me to add. Neither one of us are even disagreeing with you... the option should be there for those that want to turn it off.  I get you're disappointed because you seem to have really been looking forward to the game, but dont drag ME into your little hissy fit... take that shit up with Capcom and either buy the game or dont.

And for the record I didn't stand in the back talking trash in the schoolyard... l was right in front. Backed my shit up too

That was a joke man

Edit: And my apologies if that wasn't clear. I just had a funny mental image of us all in the school yard with me bitching about the game and when I saw the upvote I pictured that kid in the back going "yeah fuck him up!!!".

I understand where you’re coming from, but I think you should reserve a little judgement until the full game releases.

My guess is is they don’t really want you exploring at all, and that they’re focusing more on combat + making you decide hey are you fighting this zombie and using these bullets or are you running the hell out of here. And what consequences will that decision have later. I also suspect they are going to play with peoples’ recollection of the game, changing certain things up that will actually make the game a little scarier if you have played it a bunch in the past (they did this with REmake).

Again, I get that exploring was a thing you enjoyed about the old ones and you want that in regardless, but I would just encourage you to not dig in so hard about this one specific aspect until the full experience is available. It might not seem like such a big deal once that happens.

Again sorry man, I re- edited my overreaction/post :)

Nah, I have a crass, and sometimes obnoxious, sense of humor and it can be unintelligible on here because no mannerisms etc. are involved. It's backfired on me a few times so I totally get it.

The combative NY dickhead in me forgets not everybody jokes like that.
