Resident Evil 2 Remake | Official Thread of 20 Years of Jump Scares (mark spoilers, please!)

IGN has to update RE2 review because it hires only the best.

Editor's Note: This review has been updated to correct a factual error regarding the way you unlock the 2nd Game mode, and as a result, the score has been increased from 8.8 to 9.0. We regret the error and really like Resident Evil 2.]

They need Filip Miucin back. He'll fix this.

EDIT: Apparently, the reviewer has missed stuff like this before.

Gettin' casually spoiled about a few minor things in this thread. Fun! C'mon bros, not everyone has played RE2 or wants to know every little detail about what is or isn't included. Use a spoiler tag at least until the game is out to protect mine virgin eyes!

Your fault for being a hater who never liked it when it originally came out :talkhand:

And I still don't!

But even if you did play the original, why would you wanna know what's in this game beforehand? More fun to be surprised!

Honestly it’s been so long I’ve played it I forgot about those other dudes but I dunno it’s not even something that stuck in my mind after I saw it posted :p

And yet the review score changed to a 9 “even though little is new”. #NeverChangeIGN

I loved the demo and never played the original RE2, but after reading the reviews this Mr. X thing is making me not want the game.  I don't like the idea of an unkillable character following me around the entire game.  That is not the type of survivor horror game I enjoy.  I want to at least be able to fight back.  Do you think this one part will ruin the experience?

I'll be playing it tomorrow night and Friday night. If you don't need it Day 1, I can give you my opinion on it.

I really dislike the concept based on what I've read by now as well so I think I'd be able to give you a decent view on it.

It was fine in the old title because you could just exit the room and boom. This 'never safe anywhere' shit frankly sounds obnoxious and tedious on paper but I'll find out soon

Thanks! I will look forward to your impressions.  This type of stuff is the reason I never tried Alien Isolation and disliked Outlast.

So this didn’t unlock right at 9 so I didn’t have a lot of time to play it, in fact I didn’t play it at all.

I fired it up and there were a couple of image calibration screens (they really want it to look dark 😱)

Then I fiddled with the graphics settings which there appeared to be an impressive amount of. You can even push texture limits past your vram levels (some bugs may occur it warns) for the record I’ll be turning off motion blur and chromatic aberration.

So by the time I was finished with that I had to go to work, gotta wait 8 hours now before I dive in. :(

I've played about 2 1/2 hours tonight and so far no Mr. X stalking. The game moves at a pretty brisk pace so I think that's a decent amount.

I gotta say I like it a lot but there are some pretty big annoyances here for me so far.

It's almost entirely devoid of music yet is very quiet at once. There isn't an intense ambient layer of sound really is what I mean so it just feels oddly quiet. Even the save room theme played literally only once for maybe 20 seconds, that's it, it never repeats again so far. Just feels weird overall and switching to Classic OST now and then to see how it compares, it's immediately cooler each time.

While I love the zombie behavior and overall difficulty, some of them really take too much to go down. Landing 6 critical hit headshots and it gets up again isn't scary or intimidating, it just feels annoying at that point. It's gladly not super common but it happens enough where it started annoying me a bit.

I stopped shortly after the first boss for now. Won't have time to play again for two days or so I think?

In the original RE2, Mr. X didn't come out until Scenario B. Whoever you chose to play as first got the 'A' scenario, then after beating the game, you got to play the other character's 'B' scenario, which dealt with Mr. X.

I don't know if they did that this time around though.

I just played for about an hour and a half, and I'm soooooooo glad I blacked myself out for this one. I had my headphones on and the jump scares have been pretty good and unexpected. Having a female zombie scream in my ear immediately after going through a door practically made me piss myself.

It's been a long time since I've had a game suck me in like this. I know that most of that is because I'm a huge RE fan, but seriously, I haven't felt tension in a survival horror game in years. RE7 had a few jumps, but nothing sustained. This game just makes me nervous walking down a hallway, and that tension is sustained from room to room. You're no longer safe just running and zig-zagging through a room. Now that the fucking things follow you. I had a one-armed police zombie follow me out of one room, down a hallway, and into another room.

Bruh, how many pistol head shots does it fucking take? Or can you not kill with the pistol on Hardcore?

I've seen them take as many as six or seven, and on other occasions I've shot once or twice and their head exploded. It all seems to be pretty random. I'm playing on normal though, not hardcore. I thanked the great gaming gods the day Capcom went away from ink ribbons, and I'm never going back.

Meaning after a certain point he is with you the rest of the campaign?

No.

Spoiler

He goes away after you make it to a certain point with a certain item,  but until you hit that sweet spot he will be endlessly hunting you. Even if you lose him, sounds you cause make him aware of your location so he will keep finding you. But that isn't the only time he will hound you.

Yeah, zombies take a lot to go down. Don't try to permanently down every zombie you come across. That's just crazy. Put down zombies in rooms you'll be frequenting, don't worry, even on hardcore there's a shitton of ammo. Don't play it like you're playing the original game. It's not that game and trying to make it that game is only going to frustrate you. Adapt to the changes! You're not here to wipe out the zombie infestation! That was actually one of my biggest problems with the series. The zombies were a huge threat that wiped out a city and you, a rookie, show up and clean up house. Now it's not quite that simple. You can fuck up and make rookie mistakes like trying to pop every head you come across.

I stopped Hardcore and just did normal for now. I can't stand not killing everything or at least the majority of things on my first play-thru. And Hardcore is mostly just running. And felt like I had LOADS of ammo until the first boss fight. That plus lickers really fucked up my ammo count. And I don't even know if I did the boss right. I wasted so much ammo, I feel, despite hitting the weak spot.

On my second play-thru I'll have no issue ignoring enemies.
