I played on the lowest difficulty (though I got the achievement for finishing on the normal difficulty anyway) so in addition to trying a higher difficulty, I want to use things I've learned the first time. I didn't pay a lot of attention to positioning (I'd move the max distance even if it put me within range of attack on the enemy turn) and didn't take much advantage of ranged attackers until the end. I had too many squads early (more than I could deploy at once) and not enough later when the deploy limit was at the max. I'd like to try some more optimized squads too. Quote
LazyPiranha Posted October 27, 2024 Posted October 27, 2024 Final Fantasy Anticipation Rescue: The Embassy Mission Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Lies of P Spider-Man 2 The Case of the Golden Idol Tactical Breach Wizards Balatro Final Fantasy VII Remake ——————————————- Armored Core VI Fires of Rubicon This is the first Armored Core game I’ve played. I think there is an entire layer to the game the deeply appeals to some people that I just don’t care about at all, which is the endless fiddling with customization of mech appearance. Every part of your mech you can color, add weathering to, change the sheen, etc to your hearts content. This layer of customizing what is essentially faceless machine and giving it your own imagined backstory probably scratches the same itch that people painting minis or building gunpla get, but I just don’t really care all that much. Fortunately the mech combat is tight and satisfying. It gives you a mix of cannon fodder enemies to feel like an unstable killing machine and meaningful enemies to have actual challenge as well. You can kit out your mech in huge amount of ways, and my only real issue is that there are just so many options that it barely introduces you to that I mostly just stayed with a similar load out to the start. You play a few missions that way and get comfortable with it and it never forces you outside of that niche. At best you get a single training mission with branded bots that hardly move or fight back to introduce you to new build types, but it doesn’t do a great job of explaining why in an actual mission you’d want to do this. 1 Quote

LazyPiranha Posted November 9, 2024 Posted November 9, 2024 Final Fantasy Anticipation Rescue: The Embassy Mission Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Lies of P Spider-Man 2 The Case of the Golden Idol Tactical Breach Wizards Balatro Final Fantasy VII Remake Armored Core VI Fires of Rubicon ——————————— AI: The Somnium Files A visual novel murder mystery from a bunch of the same crew that made the Nonary Games series. (999, Virtues Last Reward, Zero Time Dilemma) In place of the largely random logic puzzles, you now have sections where you dive into someone’s subconsciousness and try and gather information from their dreams. It’s all somewhat random which makes sense from a dream logic perspective, and it also solves the problem of being stuck forever on a logic puzzle that just isn’t clicking for you. This game features most of what you’d expect from this team which means it is just got out of ten years solitary confinement level horny. Not a single entrendre goes undoubled. There is a separate ending that exists only if you flirt with a busty receptionist enough that you abandon your investigation entirely to run off with her. You distract a group of hired mercenaries by throwing a porno mag in their direction. The thirst levels are off the chart. It also delves into some plot fuckery that will be very familiar if you’ve played any of the nonary games, but way less so in comparison. I really enjoyed my time with it, and if you liked any of the nonary games you’ll probably enjoy this, unless the entire appeal was just the logic puzzles. Quote

As much as I understand WHY the game has the loop and why it’s essential to the overall experience, sometimes it’s really frustrating to have to wait just for the world state to be where you need it. It also doesn’t help that the main ending requires a series of time sensitive events, one of which can result in an instant fail if you do it too quickly. The game does have moments of complete brilliance and it kept me interested the entire time, even if a fair amount of that time was waiting for some god damned sand to be where I needed it to be. 1 Quote
SirRothwyn Posted November 19, 2024 Posted November 19, 2024 It's not gonna be my favorite game of the year, but I'm really getting on well with Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Feels like BioWare set out to make the Mass Effect 2 of the franchise, and they kinda nailed it. 1 Quote
Mr.Vic20 Posted November 19, 2024 Posted November 19, 2024 My GOTY is Skald: Against the Black Priory, and the runner up is Drova. The Elden Ring Expansion was also solid, but mostly just more of the same. Each year it seem my gaming preferences are better met by small, mostly unknown devs. So I guess I'm an indie gamer now? I get the impression that the team who made the game tried to top themselves this time around by obfuscating the central plot through a lot of jumping back and forth in time. The original expanded its story outward in a linear way that hid the trick of the plot until later, whereas this moves you back and forth so you’re at a loss for when any of this is happening. It all ties together nicely at the end and closes the loop, but it’s disorienting in a way I didn’t enjoy throughout. The puzzle design is good and novel, however I feel like it occasionally “cheats” for the lack of a better word. Maybe I’m just misremembering, but every time you got a puzzle key word in the original, I feel like it came directly from the text itself, be it written down, spoken aloud, or descriptive text on an item. Here though, you sometimes look at an item of interest and you just get words out of it. Not necessarily related words either just a random word to add to your vocabulary. You also no longer manually click every word you want added, it makes a fat list of words next to the term you’re viewing and dumps them into your inventory. On the one hand, the clicking wasn’t riveting gameplay, on the other forcing me to directly collect every word meant that I recognized each one as important one at a time. Now you’ll get fifteen words at once and just go “huh” and move on without absorbing them. Still, a fun logical puzzle game if that itches your brain the right way, and if you’ve got a Netflix subscription there’s literally no reason not to give both a shot. Quote

crispy4000 Posted January 1 Posted January 1 The last game I beat in 2024. It's beautiful in all the ways you'd expect and want, especially in its animation, but I found the platforming to be pretty dismal for most of the game. What I mean by that is that for most of it, there's little sense of momentum to your movement or jumps, and everything feel a tad too slow. It's the opposite of Teslagrad 2, which is a pretty average game elevated by some really fun movement concepts. Gris is more intelligently designed, but the act of traversal is unfun outside of one specific powerup. I also think the minimalist plot doesn't present itself as impactful as it could have. Perhaps I was spoiled by Arise, but Gris just didn't hit for me like it intended to. I still think it's worth a play through. It still is very much a video game, not just an artsy slideshow. I was pleasantly surprised by that given its reputation. 7.5 / 10 2024 Games Final Fantasy XVI - 8.5/10 Tinykin - 8/10 Evan's Remains - 7.5/10 Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII: Reunion - 7/10 Castle of Illusion Remake - 7.5/10 FF7R Episode Intermission - 8.5/10 Telsagrad 2 - 7.5/10 Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth - 9.5/10 New Super Mario Bros U - 8.5/10 The Case of the Golden Idol - 8.5/10 Arise: A Simple Story - 9.5/10 Gris - 7.5 / 10 Quote
