I wonder if some of the things we saw this midterm will make themselves known in 2020 or 2024.

What I mean by that is: Republicans kicked ass in the midwest in 2010, kept their hold in Florida, took over the governors' mansions in Maine and the midwest, etc. However, Obama won in all those places, including Florida, plus other places where Republicans won the governor's mansion (New Mexico, Nevada). But in 2016, the weaknesses we saw earlier made themselves more well-known as Republicans kept their hold of the midwest in 2014 and then outright won those states in 2016, plus won one of Maine's congressional districts. We saw some of the weaknesses there which weren't able to be rectified for the 2016 election.

This year, Democrats came back in the midwest, but they also made big inroads in Arizona in the Senate (which a Democrat hasn't won since 1988), came within three points of winning a Senate seat with an unapologetic liberal, flipped the Texas appellate court blue even though it had no Dems on it for two decades, and made big inroads in many state legislatures.

I have no idea what will happen in 2020. We may have to live with another Trump term. But I do wonder if, after all the years Democrats have gone after Arizona and Texas, if we're finally seeing progress on that front after really impressive showings in both states. We already kind of saw it in 2016 where Trump won the election yet did worse in those states than Romney.

I know the coming reapportionments won't happen in time for 2020, but the severe skew we saw in several states between the popular vote totals and the resulting split of House seats shows the extent to which the problem is gerrymandering and not (a lack of) Democratic enthusiasm/GOTV. So it'll be interesting to see what happens after districts are redrawn by these newly Democrat-controlled state governments.

They address that in this hard-hitting piece of journalism...

This puts the socialist Democrat well above most American households, whose median checking account balance is $3,400,

according to the latest Federal Reserve survey in 2016. Among Millennials, the median balance is about $1,400.

What this article is saying, is that in April, she had between $15,000 and $50,000 in her checking account. And since then she has also taken out $6,000 in income from her campaign... and now... 7 months later... GET THIS... she claims she can't afford rent. HOLY SHITBALLS.

Having $15k in your savings makes you an globalist elitist. Having $1 billion makes you a job creator, and good.

I'm a terrible prognosticator, so I won't begin to guess what will happen, but I do think there is a lot that could happen in two years that could change things in some swing states.

If 2020 plays out like this year but with a poor economy, we could see some real movement in Texas and elsewhere. Of course, a war, or some unknowable Trumpism could shift things more red, but I do feel like we're getting closer to a tipping point.

Probably not. But sounds like there is a chance your income is in the top 10%.

And I realize you were saying to contrast with the Fox News nonsense, but I point it out because it is sad how little most of the country makes.

I dont have any 401k or any kind of retirement plan.  All I have is maybe $5k in savings in case of an emergency.  Does that make me a bad person by their logic?

I had figured it was probably a lot lower than you'd expect, but I was still surprised when I found out that it takes a good deal less than $1 million a year to crack the 1%.

It's actually very impressive that she was able to save that much while working as a bartender.

She probably (definitely?) lived somewhat frugally which is something so-called "conservatives" love to flap their goddamned gums about as one of their "core values".

She stated recently that she only got health insurance a month or two ago so I wouldn't be shocked if she was frugal out of necessity
