There seems to be this impression that the GOP must not come out against Trump, but why? If they came together and opposed this nonsense the party might actually win some good will and the public might also realize this isn't a partisan matter.

Their base like Trump a whole hell of a lot more than anyone in Congress. If they don't support Trump, the base will kick them out and put in someone loyal

What *is* the bases actual motivation? It seems like they really only care about "not democrats" and because Trump is such an outspoken turd they like that. That makes for an interesting dependency graph: because it means they put GOP first and Trump is just the most outspoken to their enemies. If the GOP, with all of their propaganda machine, comes out against Trump, I can imagine them getting in line as long as there is still someone from the GOP in power, because that's what they really care about.

And beyond that, I'm not so sure Trump's core base is *that* powerful given what we've now seen at midterms: he didn't do the GOP any favors.

Trump's base is just conservative Republicans who favor a spiteful revanchist chauvinist patriarchal power-mad racist. There's a reason that the closest second to Donald was fucking Ted Cruz. They don't want to get rid of him because they like him and hate the median member of the public who disagrees. Winning over disaffected supporters has no interest for them because those people have no interest in the true agenda.

Quote

Sen. Kamala Harris is teaming up with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to introduce a new bill that would make it easier for people with criminal records to find housing.

The bill, dubbed the Fair Chance at Housing Act of 2019, would define what can and cannot be legally scrutinized when those with a criminal record apply for federal housing assistance. Among other things, it would make it harder to evict tenants convicted of only one criminal offense, and it would prevent the eviction of family members who knew nothing of a guilty person's criminal acts.

The bill comes as progressive groups are trying to restore ex-felons' voting rights and improve their job prospects. A number of lawmakers on both sides of the aisle also support giving judges greater sentencing leeway, limiting mandatory minimum sentences for certain drug-related offences.
