It's just interesting that you had NO problem making that generalization about Somalis but went all in defending the intentions of folks who proudly wear MAGA hats. :hmm:

Why is one generalization ok but not others?

Feel free to to re-read that thread. I said quite explicitly that there are fair assumptions to be made about the beliefs held by somebody wearing a MAGA hat, but the MAGA hat doesn't mean the same thing to all people and we can allow people to make clear their views. In the same way, your friend's family has shown that despite being from a group that largely holds anti-Semitic views, they don't and their actions bear that out.

Umm No thanks. I'm good.

Trump thinks Omar should resign, because he loves the Jews.

Quote

President Trump on Tuesday called on Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) to resign for comments on Israel that were criticized as anti-Semitic.

“I think she should either resign from Congress or she should certainly resign from the House Foreign Affairs Committee,” Trump said of the freshman lawmaker.

Omar apologized on Monday for suggesting that U.S. support for a Jewish state is the result of money flowing from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), an influential pro-Israel lobbying group.

The comments were quickly condemned by Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and other Democratic leaders. But House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) told Roll Call that Omar would not be stripped of her committee assignments.

The president said Omar’s comments are “deep seated in her heart” and called her apology “lame.”

Trump was similarly critical of Omar on Monday night but had stopped short of calling on the congresswoman to step down.

“I think she should be ashamed of herself,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One.

Asked at the time what an appropriate response would be for Omar, Trump said, “She knows what to say.”

Omar prompted criticism from members of both major parties on Sunday evening when she retweeted journalist Glenn Greenwald's response to a story about House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) promising “action” toward the Minnesota lawmaker and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) over their alleged anti-Semitism.

She captioned that retweet with the message, “It's all about the Benjamins baby,” referring to money.

Asked who she “thinks is paying American politicians to be pro-Israel,” Omar replied “AIPAC!” referencing the pro-Israel lobbying group.

The comments were quickly condemned by Pelosi and other Democratic leaders, who called her use of anti-Semitic tropes “deeply offensive.”

Republican lawmakers had seized on Omar's tweets, with McCarthy and others urging Democrats to speak out against the freshman lawmaker.

Conservatives have touted GOP leaders’ decision last month to strip Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) of his committee assignments after he questioned why the term “white supremacist” is offensive, contrasting it to Democrats’ response to Omar.

But some Democrats have called Republicans’ punishment for King too little too late, pointing out that the Iowa lawmaker has made inflammatory comments about Hispanic immigrants for years.

From our buddy Trollpez: Donald Trump’s long history of racism, from the 1970s to 2018

Quote

1991: A book by John O’Donnell, former president of Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, quoted Trump’s criticism of a black accountant: "Black guys counting my money! I hate it. The only kind of people I want counting my money are short guys that wear yarmulkes every day. … I think that the guy is lazy. And it’s probably not his fault, because laziness is a trait in blacks. It really is, I believe that. It’s not anything they can control." Trump at first denied the remarks, but later said in a 1997 Playboy interview that "the stuff O’Donnell wrote about me is probably true."

This makes the point that issue isn’t criticism of Israel generally, it is the use of anti-Semitic language and tropes by Omar. That is what she was called out for by her own party, and that is what she apologized for.

It doesn’t matter how she says it.  Her criticism of Israel will always be labeled anti-Semitic. Anyone who criticizes Israel is always hit with bad faith accusations of anti-semitism.

Also, referencing puff daddy’s song is not anti-Semitic.

“Anyone who criticizes Israel is always hit with bad faith accusations of anti-Semitism”, but simultaneously this wouldn’t be news worthy of a white Protestant said it. Is there something I’m missing with regards to these two seemingly contradictory positions you’ve expressed?

Betty McCollum has received backlash too but she doesn’t have a giant target on her head because she’s not a black Muslim.

Has McCollum used anti-Semitic tropes like ”hypnotizing the world” in regards to Israel? She seems to be a perfect example of somebody who levels strong criticism of Israel but doesn’t get the supposed treatment you and others suggest happens simply for opposing Israeli actions or policies.

You don’t have to convince me that the response to a black Muslim woman is more pointed than to a white lady, certainly it is generally.

But you and others are making the specific claim

that all criticism of Israel is met with the charge of anti-semitism, but this does not appear to be even the majority of responses when one publicly opposes something Israel does.

Maybe we should stop conflating Israel with the global Jewish community. Pretending that rhetorical attacks on Israel/AIPAC are equitable with attacks on Jewish people is both how this nonsense happens and how the right wing remains ascendant in Israeli politics. There are Israeli Muslims! The problem isn't "Jews," the problem is the assholes in charge. Treating the assholes in charge like, you know, assholes isn't anti-Semitic even if some of the language brushes up against it.

That being said we should avoid giving fuel to the truly anti-Semitic and so the language does need to be careful; but not because we should be nice to assholes -- it's because of other, different, assholes who might think you agree with them.
