I'll start with this viral ad which is REALLY well edited.

Here's the story:

  1. MJ Hegar, an Air Force combat veteran who lives in Round Rock, Texas, is running for Congress.
  2. In a now-viral ad, she used the motif of doors to explain why she is running for office on behalf of the Democratic party.
  3. Hegar said that growing up as the daughter of a single mom in Texas, following her dream of being a pilot meant "opening, pushing, and, sometimes, kicking through every door."
  4. After years of training, Hegar became a pilot and eventually served three tours in Afghanistan with the Air Force before getting into a crash, which earned her a Purple Heart.
  5. Following the crash, she was injured and couldn't fly anymore. Hegar claims that she was "barred" from her next career choice because of her gender.
  6. She sued the Pentagon over not only the job she was barred from, but also the ban on women serving in ground combat jobs — and she won.
  7. But it wasn't easy. During the lawsuit, Hegar lobbied Congress, but she said people were hesitant to hear from her because she hadn't donated money.
  8. After her Congressman John Carter, a Tea Party Republican, refused to meet with her, Hegar decided to run for office.

She's running against the guy who didn't meet with her.

Democrat Lujan Grisham widens lead over Pearce in new poll for Mexico's governor's mansion

Quote

The poll has Lujan Grisham with 51-percent, Republican Steve Pearce with 38-percent, Libertarian Bob Walsh with 3-percent and 8-percent of voters undecided. There is a 5-percent margin of error.

“This is very early. This is June so there’s a lot of time for these polls to change,” said Lonna Atkeson a UNM Political Science Professor. “People haven’t been introduced to the candidates really they have not been, not in a competitive context just in the primaries in their own competitive contests.”

Atkeson said even though it is still early, early polls provide a lot of insight.

“Those kinds of polls are indicators to people with money and the political parties where they should put their resources,” said Atkeson.

That is FUCKING BALLER.

Best news I've read today - thanks for that. All the news is so godawfully shitty that this was a nice change for once.

I mean it's great that democrats might win a wave election this time, and possibly hold their seats and win the Presidency in 2020...but are they actually going to do anything with that power? The GOP seems to be effectively tearing down institutions of government and has won SCOTUS for another generation. Unless the Democrats plan to actually pass universal healthcare or a total ban on money in politics (and federal legislation that somehow bans gerrymandering at the state level legally) then America is just as fucked as it is today. The GOP spends its time tearing things down, and the Democrats spend their time holding things together, but not advancing. It should be the opposite where conservatives spend time slowing things down and then liberals advance.

We'll see, democrats and the left are far more motivated than they've been in the past, with challenges coming from the left not just GOP in primaries and elections, dem states are passing minimum wage increases, mandatory paid family leave, environmental regulations ect...

I'm pretty sure that at this point, the Democrats will not win the house or the senate.  Trump and the GOP's political propaganda machine is too strong.

The GOP lost seats in the house and Senate in 2016, and have continued to lose in both in special elections since, Trump won the presidency while losing the popular vote by almost 3 million.  Gerrymandering they've set up in the past decade is their only hope.  But sure they're political propaganda machine is too strong.

Eh.  Maybe I'm just completely cynical and bitter after dealing with the Dotard-in-chief for the last year and a half...

Dunno about abolish ICE, but when people complain about Obamacare, deductables and out of pocket expenses are the first thing they talk about. Focus on Medicare out of pocket expenses and compare that to what you deal with with your health insurance through work or the exchanges. And keep talking about that.

This country needs a bit more socialism tbh massdriver is wildly out of touch with this country

This country needs more social insurance. This country doesn’t need any actual socialism. The organization referred to is not just about supporting social democracy. It is a big tent socialist organization that wants popular control of resources and production. This isn’t the Nordic model we are talking about anymore. It is not evidence based policy and would turn us into  a much bigger shithole than we already are.

90+% of DSA members are talking more along the lines of the Nordic model, greater help for the poor, Medicare for all, and much more highly subsidized higher education. Don't be a pedant
