I know OP is ancient but it doesn't surprise me at all. I can only speak of the region I come from but many Germans for example are theoretically strongly anti-racist and anti-fascist but in practice don't know what to do with anyone that doesn't look like them. There's a thing I've never seen in the States at all where people will absolutely openly stop, stare and look you up and down if you look in any way different, it's hideous behavior and something many younger Germans I grew up with utterly DESPISED about our culture. East Europeans absolutely take this to another level in my experience, the "babushka neighborhood surveillance" is real. Obviously all this translates straight into racist behavior. 

 

A good example is my father. I know his stances on social issues and so forth and yet he still acts noticeably like he has no idea how to act naturally with my girlfriend when she chimes in on a Skype call to say hi or whatever. She's Dominican and Haitian and it's like his face has a permanently unsolved math equation going on behind it when he looks at us.

Germans will do this for any social transgression but looking, or acting, "different" in any way is like a stare-down death sentence. I grew up in a smaller town and grew my hair out, had Metal shirts and all that shit and I was essentially the town leper judging by people's reactions. German culture is extremely narrow and rigid, probably not really to the surprise of anyone here. Shit was suffocating growing up.
