Unburn Your Armies: The Old World information trickle has begun, update: Early 2024 release announced

They started off talking about it over the christmas holidays, and have been doing Development Diaries. I've made no secret about WFB, and especially Warhammer Armies Project, are my favorite games. I'm also a huge fan of Conquest: Last Argument of Kings, though I only rarely get to play. This will be my catch all for Warhammer: The Old World.

First thing they showed was the map of the world. Basically, the game is planned to launch with 3 factions, Tomb Kings, Brettonia, and Kislev, and takes place 200 years before the End Times. Supposedly old models will be compatible, but new stuff will also obviously be released:

But the Good stuff started this week when WarCom showed off helmets and weapons from Bretton Knights and Tomb Kings:

I'll continue adding to the thread as more information is released. I expect we see this around Christmas or early into the new year, as 10th edition releases in June/july (rumored, but pretty well set in stone from cryptic statements and recent teases, and "Warhammer Epic Scale" which is supposed to release this fall.

@Zaku3 Any interest in this setting? I know you're a total war guy.

Also, Chos Dwarfs are confirmed (but not at launch), and that makes me more excited than anything.

Oh, and for anyone wondering about the title:

Goodbye, hundreds of dollars of precious plastic! Welp, perhaps it was inevitable. Many gamers get angry about changes to games they love, but YouTuber Death, Holy Death has taken that rage to an extreme in protest of the cancellation of Warhammer Fantasy Battle and its subsequent replacement with the rebooted game

At the time, this became a big meme in Warhammer community.

Omg I didn't notice you posted about. I am ready able and willing to replace my entire HE army. Except for I guess higher end old sculpts. White Lions Pheonix Lords etc. I'd add in the cases of those. Once I decide a Legion and paint up a more then playable force I'd shift gears to Old World.

I can also do Dark Elves and Wood Elves. I just love elves. I think a species of perfectionist humaniods just intrigue me as a perfectionist. Kinda like what if your whole species was a genius and everyone knows it plus you live atleast 2000 years.

Oh, I’ll be building a couple of armies. Definitely excited to add models to my Brettonians though.

I really wish I had people to play WFB with more than once or twice a year when my best friend is around.

I am a bit in a rush on a playable 30k force now because my friend into 30k's daughter is 10. She expressed interest in Genshin Impact character PVCs and I think she'll fall to minis in no time.

I long for Battlefleet Gothic to return. Life would be amazing if like I could lead a socialist revolution, set stuff up, and retire to BfG gaming so I can practice for space warfare against the traitor and the alien. (Eldar may not apply call for details)

I am hyped also due to Hell on Earth and The Verge. WFB got me interested in early modern Europe.

Nice, I have my Night Lords force for 30k. It's an enjoyable game, but the community is Tiny. I'm actually currently working on Abyssal Dwarfs for Kings of War. Also have a complete Empire force I need to paint for WFB, but it's hard to find motivation to paint with no opponents.

I really think everything they have shown for 40k 10th is perfect, and exactly what we've been asking for. High toughness vehicles so they can't be shot off the board by small arms, an overall reduction in AP to make the game less lethal (it was getting out of hand, I destroyed a Knight army in two turns with my Votann army), only 6 stratagems per faction, a lot less CPs. Free rules online, as well as a free data sheet index. TWO pages of army rules per faction!! Just getting rid of the bloat that slows the game. Looks like my tyranids are getting a bunch of new models as well!

I'm definitely happy it's a full reset, and not building off of 9th.

We now get an update on Brettonia and base sizes, both which I’m excited about. Brettonia is my second favourite army in the history of wargames(first is chaos dwarfs, even though they have been underpowered since the day they released).

They talk a bit about Heraldry. I can’t wait to paint a full new army of individual heraldry, my Fantasy army is one of my favourite painting projects ever, and im not rebasing because I still love Warhammer Armies Project and 6&8th edition.

And then, even more importantly, The Old World is being unveiled at Warhammer Fest at the end of the month! I’m really starting to believe we get might get a Christmas release for The Old World! When GW shows a game, it’s generally on the way in the near future. With summer set for a huge 40k change and it being their biggest property means they won’t unveil WH:OW next to it. So late 2023 or early 2024 seems likely. When they announced they were making it, they said 3 or 4 years. It’s 4 years since that WarhammerFest in 2019, almost to the date!

This weekends reveals. I wish there had been more, but them showing this stuff means it is coming soon.

They had a Q&A after the show, and mentioned a few things:

All old Armies will get rules, but not all will get focused on immediately or get Codices.

This will be their "Advanced Wargame", it is not for beginners and is rules heavy. It cleans WFB's rules up, but is still a game for people who enjoy the math and strategy of Warhammer. I.E. It's not a beerhammer game like AoS currently is.

First armies will be Brettonia and Tomb Kings.

No starter kits, instead they'll have Combat Patrol style boxes for people who want armies.

Most of the old models are coming back, this includes SOME metal models, which I know a lot of people hate, but I have a bunch and love them.

Cathay is coming, but it will be a few years.

for some reason, Lizardmen will be using the AOS range, and only them. Now some AoS models are old WFB models, but most of the range has been modernized. Thought it was weird that one was singled out.

@Zaku3 where are you, my man? Hope you're well!

With so many distinct armies fighting over  the Old World, you might be asking which factions would be the ones to feature in Warhammer: The Old World. We’ve seen a noble Paladin of Bretonnia and a Tomb King who seems very upset to be awoken, so it’s safe to assume that these two factions will feature prominently in this new game – but speculate no more, as the guys from the Warhammer Design Studio are here with a guide to who’s who in the era before the Siege of Praag. Take it away!

Who, Where, and When?

Over the last few weeks we’ve shown you previews of new models, shown off freshly painted examples of returning favourites and revealed many more hints of what you can expect from Warhammer: The Old World. This week we wanted to take a look at which factions will feature most prominently in the game.

The game will be set firmly within the Old World itself – the lands between the coast of Bretonnia to the west and the Worlds Edge Mountains to the east – during the decades immediately before the Great War Against Chaos and the Siege of Praag.

Much of the action in the first wave of books and supplements takes place in and around the Border Princes – the barrier lands between the Empire and Orc territory. Accordingly, we will be focusing on nine core factions.

What About the Other Factions?

Certain factions people remember from Warhammer Fantasy Battles are not part of the narrative we’re telling with The Old World, but will be provided with rules at the launch of the game.

  • Dark Elves
  • Skaven
  • Vampire Counts
  • Daemons of Chaos
  • Ogre Kingdoms
  • Lizardmen
  • Chaos Dwarfs

These legacy faction army lists will be made available for free as pdfs as a service to fans who have these classic armies on their shelf, so they can still bring them to battle for old times sake. We don’t plan to publish rules for Warhammer Age of Sigmar miniatures, except for those units that were part of the game and setting during the final edition of Warhammer Fantasy Battles.

GW narrowed down the launch window for Warhammer: the Old World after revealing new miniatures for the Bretonnian faction on Warhammer Day.

Warhammer the Old World will be “one of the first releases for 2024″, according to Warhammer Community manager Eddie Eccles. Eccles made the revelation at the end of a Warhammer Day preview stream, which gave details of the launch lineup for the Kingdom of Bretonnia faction.

The core boxes for the Tomb Kings and Bretonnia have been announced @Zaku3 @BloodyHell

Old-World-Core-Boxes.jpg

Quote

There is no single launch box for Warhammer: The Old World. Instead, there are two separate – and massive – core army boxes, each containing a full 1,250-point army with dozens of all-plastic miniatures each. On top of that, you get a complete 352-page hardback Warhammer: The Old World rulebook, a four-page reference sheet, 20 D6 dice, one six-sided scatter dice, three weapon templates, two classic red plastic measuring sticks, and transfer sheets.

The Liche Priests have exhumed a horde of 93 Tomb Kings miniatures, including the magnificent new Liche Priest on Necrolith Bone Dragon (which can additionally build a Tomb King on foot, or be built instead as a Tomb King on Bone Dragon). The rest is made up of enough classic kits to create an army fit for Settra himself – 40 Skeleton Warriors, 32 Skeleton archers, 16 Skeleton Horsemen, and three Skeleton Chariots.

Raise your banners to the Lady with the Kingdom of Bretonnia box, which contains 76 miniatures. The resplendent new Lord on Royal Pegasus can be built as a Duke or a Baron. They’re backed up by a lance formation of 12 Bretonnian Knights of the Realm, 36 Bretonnian Men-at-Arms, 24 Peasant Bowmen with two defence stakes, three Pegasus Knights, and a Kingdom of Bretonnian Transfer sheet with 176 transfers.

The rulebook will also be available separately. This weighty 352-page tome features over 70 pages of background on the World of Legend, plus Core and Advanced rules for the game, an explanation of the Winds of Magic and rules for casting spells, a gallery of armies painted by the ’Eavy Metal studio, and rules for building armies and setting up your battlefields. It will also be released as a digital ePub version for easy access to rules on the go.

Forces of Fantasy and Ravening Hordes

Rules for all nine factions in the game will be available at launch, in one of two tomes covering the forces of Good and Evil – Forces of Fantasy and Ravening Hordes respectively.

Forces of Fantasy is a 192-page book available in hardback and ePub formats covering five factions: the Dwarfen Mountain Holds, the Empire of Man, the Kingdom of Bretonnia, the Wood Elf Realms, and the High Elf Realms.

Each army gets an introduction, a gallery of miniatures, a grand army composition list, a complete set of unit profiles (so you’ll have no need for a separate army book to play), special rules, magic items, and unique spells.

Ravening Hordes contains all your Evil factions – it’s a 160-page hardback book or ePub containing similar material for the Orc and Goblin Tribes, the Warriors of Chaos, the Beastmen Brayherds, and the Tomb Kings of Khemri.

You’ll need the main Warhammer: The Old World rulebook to use either book.

Arcane Journals

In addition to these hefty hardback books, there are the Arcane Journals – softback books for each faction that expand it all out with history, heraldry, maps, special characters (including a certain undead emperor), magic items, spells, a historical scenario, and thematic Armies of Infamy which let you select armies of very different compositions.

For instance, Arcane Journal: Kingdoms of Bretonnia has rules for armies of Bretonnian Exiles and Errantry Crusades, while Arcane Journal: Tomb Kings of Khemri  provides the Nehekharan Royal Host and the Mortuary Cults. It is important to know that you don’t require an Arcane Journal to play your chosen faction – all the units and army rules are contained in Ravening Hordes or Forces of Fantasy – but they do provide a trove of extra options and extra depth for discerning generals.

The Arcane Journals for the Kingdom of Bretonnia and Tomb Kings of Khemri will arrive at launch alongside their army releases, with those for other factions following in the future.
