Remarkableriots Posted December 15, 2024 Posted December 15, 2024 I like my laptop except for the storage! I have a couple games I play a daily which take up most of the storage space. Unfortunately, I have a data cap so I can't just keep replacing the games regularly. It limits how many games I can try out because I don't have enough storage. Quote

Spawn_of_Apathy Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 Is it going to be even remotely enough uplift from a 4080 to a 5080 to justify an upgrade? The 5090 is the only card that looks like a proper upgrade. Quote

The 5090 is the only card that looks like a proper upgrade. Nobody will know until benchmarks. If it’s the reported ~20% faster than a 4090 you’d be looking at about +35-40% over a 4080. Whether that’s “worth it” or not depends on you and if you’re selling your 4080 and how much you get for it. Quote
Remarkableriots Posted December 17, 2024 Posted December 17, 2024 "GDDR7 has a starting speed of 32 gigabits per second (Gbps), which is 60% higher than GDDR6's maximum speed of 20 Gbps. Some manufacturers plan to release GDDR7 with speeds of up to 40 Gbps, which would double the bandwidth of the top GDDR6 solutions. GDDR7 has a system bandwidth of over 1.5 terabytes per second (TBps)" That seems like a good improvement. Quote
Spork3245 Posted December 17, 2024 Posted December 17, 2024 Looks like the nVidia app has a bug causing CPU usage issues that could cause a performance hit of 3-10% pending on the game. The bug is apparently linked to filters (which is enabled by default and it doesn’t matter if you actually have a filter on or not), so if you go into the overlay (ctrl + z) you can disable filters and the issue will be gone until an official fix is out. 1 Quote
Remarkableriots Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 https://www.pcgamesn.com/nvidia/geforce-rtx-5000-laptop-gpu-specs-leak Quote Nvidia has, so far, not alluded to the existence of RTX 5000-series mobile chips, making this one of the first major leaks for this hardware. According to the leak, the laptop RTX 5090 will have half the VRAM rumored to be on the desktop RTX 5090, at 16GB. An Acer leak recently appeared to confirm that the desktop version will have 32GB, meaning this is a significant cutback. However, we’ll have to wait for real-world tests to see the key differences between the laptop versions of the RTX 5090 and 5080, as they both look set to feature 16GB of VRAM and output a total of 175W. The 5090 will presumably be quicker, though, as it’s likely to have more CUDA cores, RTX cores, and Tensor cores. Quote

With an HDD you could use it to transfer games you’re not actively playing to and from your SSD (m.2) for when you want to play them without needing to redownload. It’s not the best solution but it’s something. I don’t know much about that brand you posted, so I’d recommend researching them a bit. To clarify, you could technically game off an external HDD as long as the game doesn’t require an SSD, however, load times will be extremely slow and long. 1 Quote
