Also I get some of the 3D games that were precursors to modern action games not holding up well for people. But a lot of these will be games like FF7 / SOTN where that’s not really an issue, or games that, at least for me, were so iconic they hold up anyway, like RE games or MGS.

It’s like a certainty that whenever this era of games are brought up you’re gonna have like 10 people chirp about how the games don’t hold up, and I guess maybe that’s true for the majority, but I actually play this era’s games fairly often and still love them.

Totally agree.  The PS1's library was huge.  You could find several dozen games that have aged well enough to deserve inclusion.  My worry is actually that they'll pick games of semi-'significance' over sleepers that are worth revisiting.

Also, I don't think there's any excuse not to up the resolution from PS1 native.  Or at least to give the option.  It looked like those games were untouched.

I have no idea why people think that NES games hold up better than MGS.

I can at least see it with SNES (and even with that, the SNES/Genesis was a huge evolution from Pong/Atari 2800/5200/7800/NES/Master System, so it's not really a fair comparison to the first jump into 3D). Not so much with NES. Even the blocky FF7 looks good to me due to the pre-rendered background and art direction and is a damn sight better to my eyes than this:

Me neither seriously... Once I got a little older, I realized most of those games weren't that good THEN. Especially when you're someone like me who spent a LOT of time in arcades growing up.

We've polished games very well these days.  Most games don't hold up, because we've sequelized, serialized, and remastered what we started with ages ago.  I'll go back and play older titles for the following reasons:

Nostalgia - Even then this doesn't always help a game out.  Mario Kart 64 is a good example.  It just feels clunky, and I would rather play the newer iterations.  On the flip side, I still love the original Super Mario Kart.  The muscle memory of how the physics work in that game is just ingrained in me and I get great joy out of it.

Story - If a game hasn't been remastered, it can be worth it to go back and visit a well-done story or to get a more fulfilling experience in newer games by knowing the backstory.

Something unique - Sometimes games just have a mechanic that hasn't really been explored in modern games yet.  Or the art is still appealing.  Or the sound is still appealing.  Super Mario games are a great example.  While each successive entry in the series adds new mechanics, the simplicity of the previous entries is still appealing - and Nintendo doesn't remake levels in later games so if you have a favorite stage there's only one way to play it - in the original game.

A few thoughts on this.

First... MGS is one of the games that holds up, so whatever. :p

Secondly, the stuff that doesn’t hold up from that era aren’t BAD games, it’s just hard to imagine going back to a PSX era racing game when current stuff is meaningfully better in just about every way. It’s not like a JRPG or something that looks dated but is otherwise fine, and the main hook is the story.

Lastly, I think the expectations are different depending on what genre we’re talking about. I’d be much more inclined to play an arcade accurate port of Missile Command than the original version of Resident Evil. Missile Command is just a straight up rad game, but it’s also compartmentalized and easy to consume in bite sized chunks. Resident Evil looks like shit, feels like everyone is moving underwater, and that series has (with a few notable exceptions) gotten meaningfully more interesting since then.

And also a lot of this is just straight up nostalgia fueled, people feel about FFVII the way I feel about FFVI. They’re fucking wrong, of course, but whatever. ;p

Like any gen, some NES games have aged better than others.  Kirby's Adventure is one of the highlights, for sure:

I also think SMB3 and most of the Megamans hold up very well.

Counterpoint: Some of the best kart racers of that era, like CTR and Diddy Kong racing, are absolutely worth revisiting.

True! That’s kind of a horse of a different color, though. I’d play SNES Mario Kart any old time, but going back to an older Gran Turismo would be weird.

Damn I must be out of touch because this era of games ages far better for me than the side scrolling 8bit and 16bit games of previous eras

2D sprites look loads better than blurry 3D polygons of the day.

We have an extensive RGB setup for our retro consoles and the 3D games are downright gorgeous with it, where the early 3D games are still pretty ugly.

All we know so far is it's coming bundled with Ridge Racer Type 4 which is an arcade racer that focuses quite a bit on drifting.  It's a fine choice for a racing title on a throwback console and it's also one of the more visually impressive PS1 titles.  The only thing that concerns me is how it'll handle on a d-pad.  Just seems like such a strange choice to not release this with a dual shock given how important that controller was to the console and the future of 3D gaming in general.

Give me pixel art games. These old polygonal games look bad. Plus these games and so much more are on PS3. Who would want this?

Well, the PS1 was a super popular console. And look at how well the NES and SNES Classics have sold.

Provided this thing is done well, it's obvious that a ton of people will want it.

No thank you. My PS3 works perfectly fine for BC and most of these games can be found for pennies if I don't already own them. If this played discs maybe but like someone said, I'm sure these PS1 games have not aged well.

I'd wait for a complete list of the games before making that claim. A lot of these games aren't cheap.

PS1 games work on all of them. I think only PS2 was axed from slim.

PS2 compatibility was removed from the later fatty models.

I have the 80GB MGS4 bundle and it uses software-based BC for PS2. Mine still works as well as it did the day I bought it,  but I almost never use it for BC. I figure I'll play Chrono Cross on it, since it has some issues on PS1 with the RGB.

I kind of like that the companies are doing this.  I've never really collected games in the past, but I've held on to a ton. And over the last several years I've basically gone all digital.

I'm trying to make a Secondary arcade/retro area in my game/theater/bar room and and these classic systems are great for it. I'm going to set up an arcade style cabinet from

recroommasters.com and use it for classic gaming and fighters. Hook up a secondary PS4 and Xone for fighters, and hook up NES, SNES and PS classic to it. I'm also grabbing a few of the new 1up arcade cabinets to space around it. Eventually I'll throw in a raspberri pi etc in it.

So this is great for when the kids friends are over and for the grownups. Nostalgia while watching football etc on the main TV. Plus beer
