Until this post I never really thought about where the term cracker came from and what it meant. Now I get it. While it's meaning has changed a bit over the years it's meant to offend whites and Irish immigants as being poor and lower class. It has nothing to do with whip cracking slaves. At one point is was used to describe whites that were too poor to own slaves.
