Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Friday his nomination of Michelle O'Bonsawin to the Supreme Court of Canada. She will become the first Indigenous person to serve on Canada's highest court.

That's a good thing. This will also change the balance of the court to 5 men and 4 women. In Canada, justices have a mandatory retirement age of 75, making appointments more predictable. Though appointments in Canada are far less political than in the US (short lists of nominees are vetted and suggested by non-partisan committees/groups prior to reaching the desk of the Prime Minister), the ideology will have some effect. The balance of the court will thus be:

  • 4.5 appointed by Trudeau (Liberal)
  • 3.5 appointed by Harper (Conservative)

The .5+.5 is because Harper nominated someone, and then Trudeau won, and he appointed them (rather than changing it). As I said, the nominees tend to be pretty moderate or progressive, and are almost universally praised for their credentials and temperaments.
