Commissar SFLUFAN
@Fizzzzle - any advice for this good gentleman (other than hang out in the French Quarter)?

Not sure if you'd be interested in this but when I was there last, I went into one of the hole in the wall psychic/spooky shops slightly off the beaten path because my cab driver told me a lot of them will do "locals" type of tours if you ask. Ended up getting the clearly local lady who ran the place to give us an amazing tour of the surrounding area and gave us a history lesson par excellence. We got along great and she got some drinks with us afterwards. People there are way cool in my experience.

Fizzzzle
Honestly, as stupid as it sounds, do one of the walking tours. No one wants to be "that tourist," but they're fun, you just walk around with a tour guide and drink. Bonus points if you do the ghost tours - it's all bullshit but they make it fun. There's a bar called Voodoo on Rampart that is open 24 hours a day, it's kind of a good dive bar to begin with, but there's also a walking tour company that operates out of it. And they give you 2 massive hurricanes for the tour for like 10 or 12 bucks. Watch out for roaches at night, they're fucking everywhere on the streets. You never get used to them. Especially the ones that fly. If you want to party in the French Quarter, I recommend staying off Bourbon Street. Almost everything on Bourbon is a rip off. However, if you like going to gay bars, pretty much every bar on St. Ann is a gay bar. Locals call it the "Fruit Loop." Probably my favorite area in the French Quarter tbh. Don't accept beads from the guys who walk up and down the street. They literally pick the beads up from the gutter from the previous night and try to sell them to people. Those beads are covered in piss and puke. Try to spend some time in the Garden District. That's where most of the good food is. Most restaurants in the French Quarter are overpriced garbage. Hit up New Orleans City Park. There's a bunch of stuff to do around there, too. Also the National WW2 Museum is in New Orleans for some reason. Not sure how that happened, but apparently it's supposed to be fantastic. I've never been myself. Oh and don't walk around Treme at night if you don't know where you're going. I know, I live there, you can stumble into the wrong shit at the wrong time if you're just wandering aimlessly. Best stick to the roads that you're used to. 1

The museum is there because the boats used on D-Day were predominantly made in NOLA, if I remember correctly. It’s a good museum.

Dumb question because I somehow forgot the name but what's the...NOT Bourbon Street party street? When I went, there was a small local art market and so on. It was like the not obnoxious and ripoff counterpoint to Bourbon St. Not sure if that rings a bell, I'm trying!
silentbob
I was in the French Quarter for a week about 10 years ago. We were just a street off Bourbon and Canal. Their is/was a small hole in the wall of Dr. Seuss material that was real cool to see in that area. I went with my sister so we did the Casino and Ripley’s Aquarium at the bottom there of Canal. We also did the steamboat I believe called The Nanchaz(sp) down in the French Market area. Plus we did a gator boat tour which was like 30 minutes away from the downtown core. Plus you gotta walk in one of the many cemeteries down there. Fuck though does it get hot and sticky down there, so walk with a drink in hand. I think we were 130f in humidity everyday down there, except the day we left. Oh, and don’t forget to grab a legit Beignet when you’re down there too. That shit is delicious
Bloodporne
Also read Confederacy Of Dunces while at it. That book alone made me want to visit New Orleans.

There is a market on Royal, which is one street adjacent to Bourbon. There's also a couple open air markets that are really cool by the waterfront. The entire place is clear glass with outdoor seating/music as well. We actually ate there before I knew and tried the fried gator, but comes off a little rubbery. Just take the trollies service down from Canal St. and enjoy the ride. Make sure you hit a CVS and buy yourself a metro day pass for easy travel (for I think it was $4.50 back then) Trollies will take you everywhere down there, and that ride pass came in real handy for us. I mean, one thing you can credit New Orleans for, it is possibly the most walkable/bikeable city in the south. Maybe even moreso than Atlanta. Every major road has a median that allows pedestrians to not have to cross 5 lanes of traffic at once, there are tons of bike lanes, and the streetcar runs 24/7. The streetcar is slow as shit and you can't get everywhere on it, but you can get from Tulane to Marigny pretty easily, and the route never fully stops. They also have a ferry that runs between Canal St and Algiers that runs like 20 hours a day. Basically, New Orleans is kind of shit in terms of transit on a global scale, but compared to the rest of the south, it is easily the most walkable/bikeable city. Atlanta has better transit, but it's got more sprawl. New Orleans is fairly compact. 1
