Trump could just say the leaker doesn’t exist and that the NYT made it up. If it’s made up, why would there have to be a leaker?

This is all just a ploy to make Rand Paul the President similar to the plot of House of Cards.

 

Rand Paul encourages Pence or Pence's office to write this letter

Trump finds out it was Pence or Pence's people who wrote it

Trump forces Pence to resign

Trump, who has gotten along quite nicely with Paul, nominates Paul to be the replacement VP

Senate confirms Paul 53-47

Paul, now as VP, begins to undermine the already beleaguered Trump

Trump either resigns, is 25th'd, or impeached

Paul is now President

It's Mike Pence, unless I'm wrong, which I'm not...unless I am.

 

That's who I think it is. You know who I hope it is? Donald Trump, because then it would prove to me that he's truly capable of 3D chess and just might be the genius he always claimed to be. But that's giving him way too much credit to even imagine he'd be that awesome when we know he's not.

 

So, it's Pence.

This then allows Trump to parrot out both the "fake news" and "traitorous leaker coward" labels at the same time. Claiming a disinformation campaign against you is the best they got against the truth, because they can't deny the truth, but they can cast enough doubt on it to these morons as to get them not to believe the truth.
