Resident Evil 4 Remake - Information Thread, update: 6.48 million units sold (fastest-selling game in series history)

We knew this was coming and I'm excited. Really enjoyed the RE 2 and RE 3 remakes. I still think it's weird to remake this first over RE 0 or Code Veronica, but hopefully they'll do either of those two after this one.

I always find it funny that people didn't like RE 3 remake because of two cut areas (clocktower are and water area I believe) and some things were changed around (characters/dialogue).But it plays buttery smooth, has better directing, writing, cinematography, camera angles, etc. Yes, it is short, and no, it's not hard. But that was the case with the original game. I can't imagine anyone genuinely wanting to play the original over the remake - ignoring all the remake brings to the table, the quality of life updates alone make it more palatable. RE 3 was never as good as RE 2, and thus, RE 3 remake is not as good as RE 2 remake, but it's still a great game.

Also anyone else find it weird now that RE2R, RE3R, RE7, and RE8 all have the same great graphics engine and all look consistently the same (as will RE4 remake, I'm sure) but RE1's remake is from 2002 and could probably use another remake to match it to the rest of these I feel like.

I think the original is good, but thought it drags on and outstays its welcome a bit. Get rid of the Ashley gameplay bits and tighten it up a bit and I'll be pretty happy.

I swear if they get rid of Ashley's.... oh wait, you said bits.

carry on...

I don't dislike RE3 Remake specifically because they cut an area I loved in the original, I only beat it once so I have nostalgia for it. I didn't like it because it felt like a massively wasted opportunity to me to actually build on RE2 Remake's rock solid foundations and finally deliver on RE3's original premise. The whole exploring Raccoon City, the subway system, the clock tower, all that stuff was legit awesome Resident Evil material and I feel like they completely squandered it on some weird hodgepodge that isn't nearly as good as even RE2 Remake and at once also feels paper thin. In my opinion they stripped down the fantastic level design of RE2R that made that new formula tick in the first place and kind of left RE3R in this almost-linear semi-Action game spot but with the combat of a more survival horror focused RE2R. The combat somehow consistently managed to annoy me in that new context and I liked it in RE2R. On top of that, one of the most satisfying angles of the combat was the insane gore and dismemberment and they scaled that back so weapons feel wimpier right off the bat to me.

To me it's not about the cut content because I never had nostalgia for that but they just didn't replace it, nor expand it, in any way that made the new version good to me. Granted, it's probably because I played the shit out of RE2R but between revisiting the police station, more (and expanded, come on) sewers and then the damn lab again, it's like a 5 hour game that has a ton of same-y-same to things I just played to exhaustion the year prior only not nearly as good. That's where the massively wasted potential and disappointment comes in for me. I can say yeah, this stuff was in the original but they changed RE2 fundamentally, why not with this one? They know internally that everyone who's buying this just bought RE2R and played the shit out of it.

It's like a Dark Souls II scenario for me. If I had never played RE2R, it'd be a weird and cool game probably, like a 7/10 maybe. But unfortunately it came hot off the heels of a vastly superior lightning-in-a-bottle game for me. That's not to say the originals don't have their issues, RE2R has tons of stuff that annoys me too, but whatever they came up with just worked and RE3R didn't for me. That game is anemic, does everything worse than RE2R, squanders every bit of potential the awesome idea of RE3 had and on top of it has an insanely shit final boss.

Sorry for the rant by the way but RE3R is one of those games that made me actively want to write a fuck you letter to the company lol

It looks good, will be fun - I’ll be buying. Here’s hoping they go down the Naughty Dog route and just make your companion fine on their own.

Never forget when both Bill and Ellie follow you in the first game and run into every clicker possible :buttsex:

While many find that RE3RE is disappointing I think it was just true to what Resident Evil 3 was and it was never as good as RE2.

I think this RE4 remake has the potential to be the worst remake just because RE4 is so different not only in tone but gameplay that if you put the RE2 coat of paint over it, the game will be a lesser version of RE4, a game that is still being brought out to this day and is perfectly playable.

I have faith the game isn't going to be a disaster. All these years since the original, they know what they need to fix and change.

I feel like this game would be best to have a media blackout. They are probably going to show 50-75% of the game online before its even released.

I have a difficult time believing this game really needed a remake. It's still pretty much perfect as it was since 2005.

But hey, I'm up for being proven wrong. Your move, Capcom.

I love the hell out of RE4 and have beaten it more than most other games, but I dunno if I agree that it's pretty much perfect. For one, stopping to aim, while it works well enough in RE4, I guess, is just generally less fun for me than being able to move and shoot. For a game that thinks it's an action movie, the inability to take a single step while also aiming is hilariously out of place.

Again, it worked well enough because the game was designed around it, but that doesn't mean I don't think it would work even better if you could aim and shoot and they designed it around that instead!

That's not to say I think the gameplay is bad at all or anything, I think it's still super replayable, but the atmosphere and visuals in general just kind of look like ass now. And even the HD mega texture overhaul and the VR versions can't fix this. It really feels like a game of its era and not in an amazing way. The game was a visual powerhouse when it came out, and I'd be tickled pink to see it be one again.

Finally, I've always thought the cutscenes kinda sucked a little. Like, they're funny and it's a very silly game... but seeing another take on RE4 with some real atmosphere and less goofball shenanigans could be interesting. Or maybe insanely good atmosphere AND goofball shenanigans! I really think RE8 nailed the balance of schlock and atmosphere, whereas I think RE4's atmosphere and tone are all over the place the entire game.

I would ALSO like to see a Code Veronica remake, though! Do the whole series! Fine by me!

  • Commissar SFLUFAN changed the title to Resident Evil 4 Remake (PS5/Xbox Series/PC) announced for 24 March 2023 release

RE3R being a full priced title, or not capitalizing on RE2R are unfair criticisms of the game. RE2R didn't capitalize on anything comparatively either, RE3R is just that, a remake of RE3. I didn't expect any capitalization and RE3 started as an expansion pack, so it still feels like an expansion pack still (or premium DLC as SFLUFAN suggested). These are not RE3R's fault, nor did I ever get the idea the developer was trying to do anything more than what was done with RE2R.

To me the complaints apply to RE3 as they do to RE3R, it's baked in. If you wanted them to expand or make the game "better", I don't think that was ever in the cards.

I mean I personally think a Director's Cut release with RE2R and RE3R somehow remixed as one big game would be cool. I'd buy that shit full price again. RE2R gore though. I replayed both not that long ago and it just feels like one game they cut apart awkwardly. I know it wasn't, but it feels like it especially with some distance.

RE4 is mostly an action game, if REm4ke isn't an action game I won't even get it. Probably. I am also not interested in a streamlined game pre-island. The Island isn't really my jam and a lot of that has to do with the aesthetics. Just so ugly in a bad way. Also, if there is one thing I really don't want to see is REmake2's gunplay. With RE4 is was often 3-shots for a headpop and that's want I want to see. I don't want enemies to be omega tanky from the get go.

Also just to fuel my "recycle and cut content central" conspiracy theory in my head, I immediately see they recycled Leon's model from RE2R so I can't wait to see how many corners they cut on this one.

Ada's looking different though.

I think the RE remakes will end with RE4, unless they go back and do OG RE again, which has already been remade once.

I guess when you think about it, Code Veronica seems like the other one that makes since. But for some reason they just seem to pretend that game doesn't exist.

It's weird that they ignore Code: Veronica but have re-released RE Zero multiple times. One of those games is better than the other...

If this reaches 1,000 signatures Capcom will make a Code Veronica remake

RE Code:Veronica Collector's Edition Fanart by twitter user @CoreyOCroft, with additional credits to @Legendary8Chaos and @manueldailly With the massive success and popularity of Capcom's most recent remakes/re-imaginings of Resident Evil 2 and 3, it is undeniable that Code Veronica should be the next remade installment in the franchise. It goes without saying that Capcom's RE Engine is BEAUTIFUL
