This reads to me: we're using fees as a way to shortcut building any kind of actual verification system.

I do think there's a real issue in making an API too free to use to the point that spam bots abuse the system. However, there are definitely ways to minimize that kind of behavior without introducing costs that will drive away the positive uses of the API.

I also seem to recall Elon wanting Twitter to be an "everything app" and being a champion of open access, not that there's any point in believing what he says anymore.

Twitter seems poised to start charging major brands and companies a lot of cash to hold on to their gold checkmarks going forward.

In email touting deal, company offers $250,000 in free ad space to advertisers that spend as much on the platform

Several brands are thinking about returning to the platform thanks in part to the Super Bowl, cheaper ad rates and the release of a new tool that allows advertisers to create a list of up to 1,000 keywords and avoid having their ads appear above or below tweets containing those words, ad buyers said.

A beverage company and a financial-services firm recently began advertising again, according to people familiar with the matter, but ad buyers said they haven't seen a significant influx of brands returning to Twitter.

The Venn diagram of those who subscribe to Twitter Blue and those who lost all their savings to crypto scams is perfect circle.

Over the next two days, we will update World of Warcraft® to remove the integrated Twitter® posting feature. After this small update, the function to Tweet from in-game will no longer be available, and the settings which store your Twitter credentials will no longer appear. This will not require any action by players. All trademarks referenced above are the property of their respective owners.

Expect more to follow.

Not gonna lie, the only real reason I use Twitter anymore is to post images of the games I’m playing from my PS5.

Twitter appears to be having some issues at the moment, with users seeing messages that they've exceed their daily tweet limit:

Not surprising that they have technical issues more frequently, now.

Absolutely incredible.

It seems likely that when they flipped the switch on these thresholds, somebody left the numbers at 0 or something similarly silly.

The company said it will now limit users to a maximum of 2,400 tweets a day, but users reported being prevented from tweeting far below that limit.

2400 tweets per day sounds reasonable but so do car doors that don't break when you open them.

Let me remind everyone why electronic door actuators are dumb as fuck.  Mechanical linkages are superior.

I don’t know why any person would want to be sent to mars by him. He would lose interest in flight and leave you there. But hey I guess you’d go down in history to be the first person to land on and die on mars so you’d have that going for you.

but also he’s been saying “self driving cars in 5 years” for nearly 15 years.

Mars is a one way trip. All this talk about going to Mars when what we really should be trying to figure out is how to set up a base on the moon. If we can't get a moon base going, how are we going to get a Mars base going?

Mars was always looking to be a one way trip, but a one way trip to starvation is probably not how most envision the venture ending.

The moon is closer so transit times are much quicker.  But Mars' resources are much easier to get to, including oxygen and water.

In some ways, Mars is a more sustainable effort only because once you have people there, you (Earth) will have to continue to support the scientists (and eventually settlers) or else they'll die.
