Greatoneshere Posted March 31, 2022 Posted March 31, 2022 I tried looking for one and was surprised to not find any threads on Atlanta (maybe there was one from the before times given it's been 4 years since season 2 ended). Anyone watching? The first two episodes dropped last week, the wife and I just watched them and the show is firing on all cylinders. The first episode in particular shows what Donald Glover and director Hiro Murai could do with a feature film with a budget. Really enjoying the show so far and glad to have it back. Anyone else watching? If so, thoughts? Also, weird to realize Donald Glover is 38, Brian Tyree Henry is 39, while Lakeith Steinfeld and Zazie Beets are 30. Being 35, I felt like they were younger characters - nice to know I'm not so old from the outside looking in. Looking at it in that light, if Earn is also 38 years old, damn, it's time to get his shit together, you have a daughter man! Quote
Commissar SFLUFAN Posted March 31, 2022 Posted March 31, 2022 I've heard such good things about this show that I'm definitely going to have to check it out realtively soon! Quote

TheLeon Posted March 31, 2022 Posted March 31, 2022 Another show I’m weirdly behind on. I still haven’t seen season 2, and I’ve had plenty of time. Quote
silentbob Posted March 31, 2022 Posted March 31, 2022 I have seen maybe an episode or 2 and that’s it. Although I watched the premiere episode “Three Slaps” and fucking loved it. I can’t see how it won’t get some notice come time for Emmy nominations. Quote

This is a show all of you would like or love, and it's only 10/11 episodes per season and most episodes are like a half hour usually. C'mon now, easy to binge! Seasons 3 and 4 were show concurrently and Donald Glover announced season 4 will be the end, so now's the time to get on the train. Quote

TheLeon Posted April 1, 2022 Posted April 1, 2022 Oh sure, it’s just a dozen quick episodes of this, then a few dozen episodes of Peaky Blinders, then however many seasons of Better Call Saul to catch up on before that final season, now watch all of The Last Kingdom now that it’s done and I can get ready for whatever movie(s) come after that. Plus like 30 more shows from just the last year or two that I should watch. Generally I love TV and staying caught up with all the big shows, but more and more lately it’s felt overwhelming, so I’ve been saying “fuck it” and rewatching older comfort shows while playing games on my iPad. 1 Quote
Greatoneshere Posted April 5, 2022 Author Posted April 5, 2022 Episode 3 released last week and the show continues to go strong - the casual racism and then white savior guilt at the London house party was low key hilarious. Quote
Commissar SFLUFAN Posted April 5, 2022 Posted April 5, 2022 This video essay piqued my interest in the show even further! 1 Quote
Greatoneshere Posted April 11, 2022 Author Posted April 11, 2022 Yeah I saw the same essay, definitely nails the show's tone, it's pretty on point. Quote
Greatoneshere Posted July 22, 2022 Author Posted July 22, 2022 I'm definitely excited - a shame to see the show end but whatever Hiro Murai and crew do next is gonna be awesome. Quote
Commissar SFLUFAN Posted July 30, 2022 Posted July 30, 2022 I have finally started watching Atlanta! 1 Quote

I whole heartedly agree with you. Once you see B.A.N., Teddy Perkins, and Three Slaps (three different episodes), the show becomes something Lynchian. The surreality and dream logic also remind me of Jodorowsky and Refn at times. You can see why I've been pushy about it on the boards. Quote

Hell, Teddy Perkins could very well be one of the most terrifying pieces of media I've ever experienced! 1 Quote

Glover's performance was unnerving and unnsettling. Also, it's random, but some episodes have mid-credits scenes and some have end credits scenes and some have both and some have none. I've sometimes missed them and had to go back, so thought I'd give a heads up just in case! Quote
Greatoneshere Posted September 24, 2022 Author Posted September 24, 2022 This is more for @Commissar SFLUFAN, but if you catch up in time to see this show week to week, the Dasani bit in episode 3 got me good. I think you will thoroughly enjoy it. I'm Pakistani-American, but watching shows like Atlanta gives me such great insight into at least an aspect of Black culture and experiences, I feel like, and the Dasani bit feels like a deep cut. I hope more people watch the show "Ramy" (Mahershala Ali is in it!) to get a PA/NJ brown guy from South Asia perspective. Quote
Zeluge Posted September 27, 2022 Posted September 27, 2022 It's the best show on TV right now and if you're not watching, you're a bad person. Them's the rules, sorry. I wanted to eat that sandwich in the most recent episode. Might try to make it. EDIT: Oh, and the MF DOOM stuff in the premiere was aces. Wonderful way to pay tribute. Loved Paper Boi following the clues along to Blue Blood's music ("played" by the MF-DOOM-inspired Earl Sweatshirt!) 1 Quote

skillzdadirecta Posted October 8, 2022 Posted October 8, 2022 Just binged the whole series and got to episode 2 of the most current season. I have a TON of thoughts, but all I'll say for now is Earn has become the black Walter White with what he pulled in this episode. 3 Quote
Greatoneshere Posted October 8, 2022 Author Posted October 8, 2022 Episode 5 skewered a very certain famous black person in last Thursday night's episode - the show firing on all cylinders. Quote

Commissar SFLUFAN Posted October 13, 2022 Posted October 13, 2022 I just got to the "Trini 2 De Bone" episode of Season 3 and I'm ABSOLUTELY DYING at the daughter's description of the food at the wake. ALL of those dishes are PURE Trinidadian cuisine! 1 Quote
Commissar SFLUFAN Posted October 13, 2022 Posted October 13, 2022 OMG @ the preacher! "All yuh bow yuh heads and pray!" That is EXACTLY how prayers begin in Trinidadian churches. 1 Quote
Greatoneshere Posted October 13, 2022 Author Posted October 13, 2022 The deep cuts in Atlanta are legit. Trini 2 De Bone was a pretty divisive episode but I loved it. Quote
Commissar SFLUFAN Posted October 17, 2022 Posted October 17, 2022 Alright, done with Season 3 and on to Season 4! Season 3 was one of the most interesting/unique television viewing experiences I've ever had. I really don't think there's a way for me to adequately describe it at all! 1 Quote

Fans of the show found season 2 and moreso season 3 divisive. Some just want comedy chemistry with the cast and a straightforward story but I prefer this instead. Donald Glover and the crew are aware of it because their plot summaries for season 3 episodes were ridiculous when the season initially dropped. Let me know what you think of season 4 so far. Last Thursday's episode was another winner. Quote
