2022 begins!

I just got impatient and figured @Commissar SFLUFAN was busy so I'm making 2022. This is just where you post which games you've completed this year and comment on/critique them.

I just finished another playthrough of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Fun factor alone makes R&C games a joy to revisit, though I played so many R&C games last year that I think I'm good for a while. :p

I got much better at finishing games last year (even pre accident!) and hope to continue that into this year. I find posting a bit more on what I’m currently playing helps, it reminds me why I want to keep playing certain games.

Honestly I think part of it is that 2021 was a low-key a kick ass year for games, so let’s see what you got 2022.

Looking back, I'm REALLY surprised at how much I played, but there was so freaking much even though, yes, it felt a bit lower key in terms of amount of "big" games. But there were still so many games! I don't think anyone here plays Ace Attorney, but fucking A, The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles was a surprise of a release and took us months of on-and-off playing to complete.

We even got a new open world 3D main line Mario game that was amazing in 2021 and there were so many good games everyone forgot about it! I’m not even sure now looking back if it even lacked in big AAA must plays, it’s just that it wasn’t 2017 or 2018 come GOTY time.

Inscryption.

Did I buy, play, and beat this game within a handful of days just so I could listen to GotY podcasts and not be spoiled?  Yes.  Yes I did.

Overall I enjoyed it very much.  I probably could have beat it much faster if I had any sort of brain for deck building games, but I don’t.  I went in knowing as little as possible beyond knowing I should know as little as possible and it’s really impressive.  I won’t say anything more beyond it’s well worth your time.

I'm looking forward to delving into some of the indies that made waves. I have The Forgotten City shipping, which I hear is for people who were excited about 12 Minutes and the concept behind it but hated the story.

I liked The Forgotten City quite a bit as well, but that squeezed in before 2022.

I mean I made a thread about it but yeah...

Hunt: Showdown

I'm terrible at it and don't expect to be decent for a long time but after initially being totally turned off by its staggering learning curve, every tiny bit of new understanding feels like an achievement. Also along with Returnal, possibly one of the most atmospheric and immersive games I've played in a long time. The sound design is incredible.

Don't worry. :p These threads are just yearly threads where we compile everything we played for easy to find critiques and impressions but not meant to replace dedicated threads. @Keyser_Soze can tell you that I judge whether a thread is worthy, and yours has been deemed worthy. Told You So Mic Drop GIF by FullMag

Until Dawn

After luckily scoring a PS5 I have been using it mostly to catch up on the generation of games I missed not having a PS4.

I liked Until Dawn a lot.  I knew the twist from ages ago so there weren’t any big surprises but it was fun and didn’t overstay it’s welcome.  Two things I found frustrating were that some deaths felt needlessly cheap but I suppose that floats with horror movie logic, and that the only black character is laughably easy to let die.  It’s one of the few times the game actively punishes you for attempting to rescue someone.  I had no idea what I did wrong but apparently you’re supposed to make him leave his whiny girlfriend to die.  Felt kind of shitty.

Spoiler

I think most of us lost him first time around. He and the girl pretending to sleeping around I think are the two easiest ones, and they're two of the ones I lost my first try.

The main girl I lost 30 seconds before the game ended. FFFUUU-

Spoiler

I lost Mike at the last moment by blowing the house too early, Matt because I didn't ditch Emily, Ashley because I investigated the voice, and Josh because apparently I didn't find a document in the caves right beforehand.  Matt and Ashley felt kind of cheap, Josh I suppose makes some sense, and Mike is my own fault for sure.  Sucks that Matt dies so early because if I want to run the table I have to start again so far back.

Spoiler

I wouldn’t say Ashley’s is cheap, mainly because it’s a trope to die when splitting up, but particularly because when you investigate, you can choose to keep walking and rendezvous with the rest.

Spoiler

I thought it was mainly cheap because the moment before that the game literally shows you Jess, alone, in the caves, calling out.  I'm curious what happens if there's no one alive in the mines, does it just filter through voices and choose someone who you know is still around or does it not happen at all?  If both Jess and Matt are dead at that point, who other than Josh could even be calling out?

Just beat Guardians of the Galaxy. I really enjoyed it for the story and characters. The combat wasn't anything special and more importantly not fun. What they produced for a comic book style game though was impressive and I'm glad I stuck it out after a slow start. Not sure if this is spoilers so

Spoiler

It looks like they are definitely making a sequel with how the game ends. I'm down for sure and if they can maybe open the game up a bit more and build upon the combat they could have an incredible game on their hands.

Overall, I'd give the game a solid 8/10 and one of the better games I've played in a while. Thank again for those that recommend me to play this and for @ManUtdRedDevils for buying this for me. Great ride!

I too just finished Guardians of the Galaxy 8.5/10 (XSX) I played on We Got This, I Think difficulty and was probably the best option for me. I played the game pretty stoned and it made the colour pop on my 4K set (and Dolby Vision) of an already beautiful looking game. I played with RTX enable and looked amazing with some slowdown here and there. Weird glitch happened 2-e times where I needed to quit the game to fix horrendous slowdown. I never tried another mode but the game dialogue was good but gameplay was down to a literal crawl in frame rate. Quit game and restart fro menu, fixed the problem every time. Another glitch that happen a few time were with characters not registering after being defeated to advance story, and some character just completely missing from the group. Restart checkpoint and I was good to go again. The dialogue in this game is pretty goddamn outstanding and barely repeats. I even love when I leave the story to attain a collectable, they start bad mouthing me. The huddle idea is great and in some ways I hope the sequel happens/gives you more options to pick from. Near the end of the game I kinda saw where the story would go from my little comic book knowledge. Still I enjoyed the ride, gameplay was fun but would like to see a more open combat system or a online co-op

Probably jump back and work on the Halo Infinite campaign and will probably try Mass Effect too

Finished Final Fantasy III Pixel Remaster, thus finishing the 8 bit trilogy. I initially held off the Pixel Remasters because I'm not that fond of the first 3 entries in the series (Earthbound the Beginning > Phantasy Star > Dragon Quest > Final Fantasy) but after seeing other people respond favorably to them I decided to give them a go. Interestingly the first game brought back more memories of the original NES version than the GBA version, II was less annoying without having to prepare for the bonus dungeon of the GBA version and III took much less time without needing to get to level 99 and max out all jobs to fight the Iron Giant like in the DS version (though I still had each job maxed with at least one character). All in all it was an enjoyable replay and has me looking forward to playing the much better 16 bit trilogy.

Beat Sonic Colors. It was about as good as I’ve heard/expected, maybe not quite as good as Generations but close. I felt at least towards the end that there wasn’t as much “meat” to the levels as Lost World though. Maybe I’ll go red coin collecting when I get my deck and the super short levels will make more sense, but if you are just playing the game it can seem like filler. You’re usually looking at about 3 real levels per world out of like 7.  It also does tend to lean on switching to 2D Sonic to conserve resources too much.

It’s obvious budget wise they create these sections with very little going on besides bouncing on a platform over some obstacles with a 2D background conveying most of the scene. And during these extended points, you really wish you could go back to the core 3d boost gameplay which is why you are really here.

The end of the game didn’t get as frustrating as Lost World but I still didn’t think the last boss and the preceding level were exactly fun with long no checkpoint sections. The last world is just one auto runner level and then the boss essentially, it not being a whole world probably spared it from being as painful.

Overall probably a solid 7.5/10 as a game, 8.5 as a Sonic fan. Certainly a lot of replayability here that I’ll take advantage of once I get this version portable with the deck.

I would say between the two I played recently though, if you’d only play one of them, to pick Lost World actually. Just because while Sonic Colors is a more all around well made game, and has far less low’s, I think the quality throughout most of them is close enough and Lost World is a much more interesting game and actually has higher highs imo.

I finished Far Cry 6, and while I enjoyed it for the most part I did find the ending to be a little disappointing. It just wasn’t a very satisfying conclusion for all that you have to do and go through to reach it IMO.

The core game itself was pretty fun, if albeit somewhat repetitive. A lot of exciting stuff happened throughout, both scripted and unscripted. I still like Far Cry 3 more, but this is my second favorite in the series.

Miles Morales

An open world game with a reasonable play time, modest amount of side quests, and enough collectibles that I can find all of them in like 20ish hours?  More of this all the time please.  Really just a solid experience all around my only complaint is the real awkward juxtaposition if BLM both literally and figuratively combined with completely un-interrogated cop worship and one of the trophies being for beating new game plus.  You’re going to give me all of these delightfully manageable goals for everything and then fumble to ball at the last second by making me replay the whole thing to get the platinum?  Boo I say, boo.

Finished Spongebob Battle for Bikini bottom last night, VERY solid Mario 64 style 3D platformer! Probably the best licensed one I can think of and in general on the upper end of the gender. Great level design throughout, changes up gameplay just enough with the three different characters, good times.

I think that you mean genre. :p Thanks for the impressions, this wasn’t even on my radar but now I think that I’ll check it out when it’s cheap.

I picked up Mars Horizons and played through it recently. It's a game where you manage the space program from the first satellite to landing on mars. It seemed like an interesting idea and had good reviews, but I don't think it's great game.

Each area of the game is too distinct, and there's too little insight into everything going on, which makes each area feel isolated. You select what to research, build out your launch facilities base, plan your missions, build your rockets, and execute your missions, but none are that compelling. For example, lets say that I'm thinking a few steps ahead and want to over-build a few rockets so that I can level those up for some more important missions to come. Well, it's not that easy to figure out what rockets you actually need for those future missions. There's a tool to help you figure that out once you've already begun the mission, but you can speculate on future ones. You can just do the math, but it really seems like there should be more insight there.

Same goes for building out your base. I don't know how big different buildings are until they're built, so while I'm building out my shuttle program and researching the landing strip, it would sure be nice to be able to take that into account while placing buildings, I can't really do that without looking up the numbers online. You can move buildings after the fact, but I really feel like I should be able to plan ahead better, since that's really the name of the game.

Likewise, the game is structured around the idea of a race, but there's little info on how the other participants are doing. No, I shouldn't have perfect insight into what the USSR is doing, but maybe an overall view of what they've accomplished versus what I have? Later in the game the Mars preparedness number is kinda helpful in that, but it's still not great. I beat the game and don't rightfully have a perfect idea of if I crushed them or just squeezed by.

The missions themselves are little mini-games that I did not find challenging or rewarding, but thankfully you can skip them. I'm sure if I did them all by hand I'd have done better, but they just were not exciting enough to bother.

I ended up getting about 10 hours of of my 10 dollars, so I can't really complain, but I'd probably have been better off buying an expansion for Surviving Mars.

Superliminal- fun little game, only takes a few hours for a normal playthrough.

The Outer Wilds - I’ve mentioned this elsewhere, but I bounced off of this game almost immediately when it first came out. I didn’t give it much time. Returning to it now, I quickly fell under the game’s spell. It was nearly all I could think about until I finished it. Fantastic game. Any feelings of frustration I felt during it were almost always quickly followed up with a surge of joy. The wonder of discovery! The thrill of mastering mysterious game mechanics!

The Gunk: 7/10 - I wrapped this up and it's a solid game. It took around six hours to beat. It reminded me a lot of Tomb Raider, the exploration ones not the murder ones. It's fairly linear, but exploring the world and solving puzzles gave me that TR vibe, except with a glove (Hey why did they give a character a "power glove" that sucks like a vacuum? ) The graphics are fine for what they are, almost a molded clay look. The game performs well for the most part but there is an area with an elevator you visit multiple times and as it ascends the frame rate drops like a brick. I gather this is because it's loading new areas and most of the game are small little areas cut by a small load, so most of the time it is masked except this area. Also, DF said they liked the music but it put me to sleep.

The game was made by a pretty small team, the credits show only one production baby and strange they put the CEO of the company in the credits too. In any case just the kind of game you'd want to pay on game pass.

Finished Star Ward Fallen Jedi, what a thrilling game. It had a lot more platforming and set piece action than I thought. Really, only in Chapter 2 at the Zeffo tomb did the back tracking/puzzle part of it kind of slow down the fun for a bit. Beyond that some amazing scenes here that kind of fulfilled the wish for 1313 for me. Except I’m pretty sure this is better than that would have been because the platforming and movement is ace for this kind of game.

Oh yeah, and I actually did not expect that at the end.

Super stoked for the sequel, hope the rumors of this year are true!
