So do I. I realize that viking shit used to be a popular genre, but it really dopes nothing for me.

Doesn't help that the trailer is like a greatest hits of every played out cliche and trope possible. I remember reading that originally this was supposed to be shot in black & white and be more of a brooding, psychological take while this trailer makes it look like a Game of Thrones episode. Wouldn't be the first time a trailer is the polar opposite of the actual film but as it stands my interest in this would be 0/10 if it didn't have Eggers' name on it.

Yeah, I'll bet this trailer is focusing on the straightforward action/revenge movie stuff because that's easy to sell. I don't know if this means anything, but his co-writer on this also has a credit on Lamb, so between that and Eggers' own track record, I'm guessing the movie will be... different.

A Viking legend retold with such raw immediacy that its fjords of blood seem freshly spilled for the first time in 1,000 years.

This gory Viking tale works when considering its parts, but never really as a whole.

'The Witch' director Robert Eggers has vision to burn, but robs this revenge story of the tragic twist it needs to engage us emotionally.

A triumph from Robert Eggers.

It’s a vivid look at the past, rendered in gore and grime, but it’s shallow compared to Robert Eggers’ past work

Robert Eggers’s 'The Northman' doesn’t lack for blood and guts, but it doesn’t play enough in the well of the weird.

Just saw this one - hey, I went to the theater TWICE this weekend and I honestly can't remember the last time I did that!

This move is EXACTLY what I would expect to see if someone ever decided to commit an Amon Amarth album to film

The underlying revenge/male power fantasy storyline is pretty much exactly what you'd expect it to be, but it's told with such visceral visual flair that you can't help but be impressed by what's on full bloody display.  This film was pretty much "maximum Norse/Viking" in just about every respect to the point where I have to wonder if the filmmakers didn't have a checklist to ensure that they hit upon each and every possible Norse trope lest they leave one out!

Overall, a pretty good masculine, testosterone-fueled experience...just don't go expecting anything particularly insightful :p

As soon as the creds rolled, a girl further up front said this: "What THE FUCK was THAT!?" Now, I don't have a clue as to whether or not that was a compliment or a condemnation but I freaking LOVED this film.

Spoiler

Really takes the whole "When seeking vengeance, dig two graves." sentiment quite literally when all was said & done.

I didn't care for the trailers or anything but still wanted to support Eggers. Went to see it and yea, it wasn't my cup of tea and I thought Skarsgard was surprisingly weak in this. I can't put my finger on it but I just couldn't see him as anything but...Skarsgard cosplaying and constantly falling into like five different accents.

It's almost a cliche to praise Dafoe at this point but every single short scene with him in it was legit the bright spots in the film for me.

Watched this the other night and it was indeed... meh. Agree with @Bloodporneabout how surprisingly weak Skaarsgard was in this. It's like he thought he could just let his muscles do the acting.

The action choreography looked so staged that I have to wonder if that was a deliberate choice or a consequence of them wanting to do a bunch of wide, uninterrupted takes with minimal editing.  C+ movie.

My problem with the movie was that despite sometimes veering into it, it was neither mystical and otherworldly enough nor a good Action flick enough. It lives in some weird space where it tries to straddle the line and just bored me on all ends. Also, Nicole Kidman looked absurd as some viking mom while having 3,000 lbs of Hollywood plastic surgery. Another role I couldn't even buy for five seconds and I'm usually not nearly that petty. I just don't think the movie worked and I'm secretly kinda pissed that this is what came after The Lighthouse instead of his take on Nosferatu.

Granted, I didn't enjoy The Lighthouse at first either but I had the desire to go back and analyze it and re-watched it again (and again, and again). The Northman went in one ear and out the other for me. It tries to be, and seems to think, it's a "heavy" film but it's lightweight and forgettable to me.

PS: The accents were legitimately dreadful in this which is baffling for someone like Eggers.
