So how about that student loan forgiveness.

  • Jason changed the title to So how about that student loan forgiveness.

Forgiving student loans is about the only thing Democrats can do that would interest me in voting for them going forward. Their current agenda has been a dumpster fire of wannabe progress that boils down to the simple premise that "they are not Donald Trump". BBB is a non-starter, mainly because they can't seem to nail it down to a simple explanation that causes your average Joe to think: "Oh, okay. That's cool." Instead, it does a lot of things to help a people's agenda instead of appealing to all of the people who could use the aid. It seems to come down to trillions of dollars to do...something.

Forgiving student loans is tangible. Telling us to get ready to start making payments again basically tells us that putting Democrats in office to get rid of the bad Donald really didn't do anything other than make it so that we don't have to listen to the rantings of a delusional game show host. If they don't do something soon, people are honestly going to start thinking: "Well, at least with Trump we get crazy drama, and that might be better than a feeling that nothing seems to happen."

I’ve never heard paid leave (yes I know it still has to be negotiated) or universal pre-K are not tangible. And considering the youth interest in climate change, I’ve never heard that be called not tangible.

BBB is worth more than anything else they’ve proposed in terms of tangible benefits to working people, easily.

Erasing $10k of my student loans would bring them down into the "let's make a plan to pay these off" territory from the  "let's just fill out the IDR form every year and have them forgiven once they're 20 years old" territory.

Doing what he said he was going to do is important, and he should just do it. I agree 100%.

And for people affected by student debt now, it would be a big deal. But something like build back better and even infrastructure focus more on long-term benefits that Permanently change things and try to fix things that are broken. removing all lead pipes in the country is a big big deal that has long lasting ramifications. Creating more of an electric charging station grid to make it easier for consumers to purchase electric cars and to make the transition quicker so we can get a fossil fuels is a big deal globally. A National paid leave program would affect anyone with a job for generations.

Forgiving student debt is important but doesn’t really change the structure that brings people to that kind of debt.

Doesn’t mean it’s not something he should fulfill considering he promised it.

I don’t really see the point in bringing up literally anything that the legislature needs to do in comparison to something the President can do whenever he feels like. The executive could move on a meaningful amount of student loan debt forgiveness and there is nothing stopping Biden from that other than his own desires.

Mostly because the point was made that student loan debt is the most tangible thing compared to BBB, and it’s tangible but is not anywhere near as important long term as any of the biggest items in BBB.

It’s still an easy win to do student debt forgiveness. That’s not mutually exclusive from BBB being more important. And all gets away from the fact that both items are good for people.

A wee more on that tweet:

“Later this week, we will be announcing whether to extend the pause further,” an Education Department spokesperson said.

Education Department officials have for months publicly insisted that student loan payments would begin on Feb. 1 when the existing pandemic relief — which was extended several times by both the Trump and Biden administrations — is set to expire.

But on Tuesday, an Education Department official indicated that the restart of student loan payments could again be postponed.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) earlier this month said that the moratorium on student loan payments and interest should be extended until the economy reaches pre-pandemic levels of employment.

Separately, since taking office, Biden's Department of Education has made it easier for people who were defrauded by for-profit colleges to seek debt relief. It has also temporarily expanded the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program that cancels outstanding debt for qualifying public service workers after they have made payments for 10 years.

he needs to do what he said he would. which isn’t much, but if he can’t keep his word a lot of people who are on the younger side are going to be pissed.
