The story of A Plague Tale begins in 1349. Rats swarm in uninterrupted waves throughout the territory of France. In the plague-ridden villages, countryside and battlefields, this uncontrollable and voracious mass advances relentlessly. The creatures devour everything in their path, men and animals alike, to satisfy the endless hunger of their ever-increasing numbers. In the midst of hundreds of piled corpses, hordes of rats teem over the bodies and leave little hope for Amicia and Hugo to escape with their lives - the faint glow of the flame Amicia holds appears to be the only thing that repels A Plague Tale: Innocence’s swarming menace.

New previews:

A Plague Tale: Innocence explores war, sickness, and the wrath of the French Inquisition (PCGamesN)

The rats are at the centre of A Plague Tale: Innocence’s gruesome stage. Asobo Studio will tell you its medieval tragedy is about two children trying to survive the black plague that decimated the 14th century – but no, it’s the bloodthirsty rodents who are the stars.

A Plague Tale: Innocence Interview With Asobo Studio — Working Conditions, Delays, Cutting Features, and More (PlayStation Lifestyle)

During our time at Focus Home Interactive’s What Next event, we spoke with Creative Director for A Plague Tale: Innocence, David Dedeine. He had a lot to say about crunch, working conditions, trophies, and the troubles of developing games. A Plague Tale is a narrative driven adventure game, with an emphasis on the relationship of two siblings, Hugo and Amicia.

A Plague Tale: Innocence offers stealth, story, and a sense of purpose (Newsweek)

A Plague Tale: Innocence is not your typical game. It’s not an open-world sandbox, it doesn’t have any battle royale or MMO elements. There’s no DLC. No microtransactions. For many gamers, myself included, these are selling points. It is a wholly self-contained narrative spread across 12-15 hours of gameplay set in medieval France during the time of the Black Death, better known as the bubonic plague. It follows the journey of a young noble, Amicia, a 14-year-old who finds herself the caretaker for her 5-year-old brother, Hugo, after their parents are murdered on the family estate during an inquisition-style raid. Hugo suffers from a strange disease, and his mother’s research (and inquiries into alternative medicine) seem to have struck a nerve among the paranoid populace who look for reasons, and scapegoats, to explain the plague that spreads across the countryside.

A Plague Tale: Innocence preview: "Playing a child being pursued by brutal adults is frightening." (GamesRadar+)

Something vile is worming its way through the kingdom of France, something even worse than the barbaric and brutal invasion of the English – because this is the time of the 100 Years’ War, and the conflict already has the population on edge. Villagers are plagued with sickness and bites in the night, as well as the unwelcome presence of the merciless English troops.

A Plague Tale: Innocence Depicts the Evolution of Two Siblings’ Relationship, But Can Gameplay Match? (PlayStation Lifestyle)

A Plague Tale: Innocence has the potential of being a really fascinating experience with an emphasis on narrative and characters. It’s no easy task to mesh that idea with video game mechanics in a way that feels natural and organic, but I’m willing to give Asobo Studio the benefit of the doubt. Still my fear is that this will end up being one long escort mission, with a vision that’s at odds with the gameplay, but we’ll have to wait for the full experience to find out.

A Plague Tale: Innocence is Dark, Grim and Utterly Enjoyable (TechRaptor)

Sadly my time with A Plague Tale: Innocence was over far too quickly. The first 3 chapters, including the prologue, ran me about an hour and a half and managed to show off a decent amount of mechanical variety. The combination of stealth, puzzles and fleeing gameplay gelled together very well, and the very occasional combat keeps Plague Tale from repeating itself. The gameplay elements are all tied together by a very compelling narrative and I for one cannot wait to see where it goes on release day.

A Plague Tale: Innocence is here to make you realise how much we’ve become used to death in video games (GamesRadar+)

A Plague Tale: Innocence is a game you have to keep an eye out for. Although I’ve focused on how it treats death, the game isn’t all dark morbid observations: poignant moments like Hugo lighting candles in an abandoned church to show he’s thinking about his mother are there to give you a brief respite from fleeing. At unexpected moments Hugo’s simple child mind lifts the unrelenting burden placed on Amicia’s shoulders too, whether that’s him putting a flower in her hair or jumping around like the frogs he can see at the water’s edge. This combination of a growing sibling relationship and the outstanding graphics prove that A Plague Tale: Innocence is one to watch out for, and could just be 2019’s sleeper hit.

A Plague Tale: Innocence Interview – A Harrowing Journey (GamingBolt)

Amidst a year that is busy with megaton releases from some of the biggest franchises and developers in the industry, A Plague Tale: Innocence has made its own mark as a highly anticipated game. With gorgeous aesthetics, a focus on narrative and characters that appeals to all story enthusiasts out there, and the promise of a cohesive, guided adventure without any bloat, Asobo Studio’s upcoming action adventure title has continued to look better and better from the day it was first revealed.

A Plague Tale: Innocence Preview – Dodging Rats with Your Little Brother (Wccftech)

Plague Tale is setting itself up to be a fantastic game. Exciting is the best word to describe it. Its never quite a horror game, but nor is it an action one either. While sometimes it feels like a puzzle game or a stealth game, you’re never not in danger and always feel like you’re pushing forward. The levels we’ve seen so far are all imaginative and varied in the way you move through them and view them. From the narrow and winding streets of a village to the open sprawl of a farm, each location has its own personality that is infected by the evil that swarms in the dark. If the rest of the ten to fifteen-hour adventure is as good as the opening levels, Plague Tale could become a great single player game.

I'm really rooting for this one to be good. The setting and theme is incredible but will wait for reviews to see what the gameplay vs. cutscenes/story balance will be and general impressions on the combat and so on.

It looks great overall but the Euro Jank is definitely strong with this one based on the combat footage where she fights the armored knight with a mace in an enclosed space for example.

A Plague Tale: Innocence is a brilliant new IP which satisfied me in every way imaginable. The visuals were simply stunning, albeit a little blurry in certain scenes, the voice acting and music were perfectly recorded and pieced together, the gameplay was broken up between stealth, exploration and puzzles, and the narrative was both exciting and engaging to play through. Despite the few personal issues I had with the forced combat segments, I thoroughly enjoyed playing through this alternative take on the deadly Black Death and how two siblings worked together to overcome the dangers they were faced with.

By the end of A Plague Tale, its surviving heroes have earned their rest. It's hard to say goodbye to them, though, the same way it's hard to no longer spend time with the characters of a great book or TV show. A bittersweet post-credits sting hints at what might await the de Runes in the future; hopefully that's a story that players will be able to explore one day.

If you don't know the name Asobo Studio, you will after A Plague Tale. It clearly had a vision for what it wanted this game to be and despite the presumably lower budget than similar games, it rarely feels hamstrung by financial constraints. It's a game that looks, sounds, and plays great, and is all wrapped up in a story that unfolds irresistibly. For anyone who still longs for single-player games they can just sink their teeth into and enjoy, A Plague Tale should shoot to the top of your list. It's one of the year's best games.

A Plague Tale is an interesting new intellectual property. The period of the black death was reimagined with a narrative permeated by mystical elements, while exploring the fraternal relationship between Amicia and Hugo. It's important to understand A Plague Tale: Innocence is more story driven than anything else. It doesn't matter if there are some rough patches here or there could be a little more polish there, as it's largely about Amicia and Hugo's journey. When you start to see, not just in words, but how the two interact between scenes, you can start to see how the two develop. It makes for a thrilling ride, even if the opposition can be quite terrifying. Combine that with puzzles and it's a solid adventure for fans of story driven or strategic titles.

A Plague Tale, at times, feels like a missing early chapter of the Assassin's Creed catalogue. Its ability to bend a truly fascinating point in documented history into a fantastical, mythical story that keeps you invested from start to finish is remarkable. It's a cinematic journey that is uncomplicated in its delivery, managing to occupy gamers without distracting from the game's narrative and the bond that develops between the de Rune siblings which, in the end, is A Plague Tale's undoubted strength.

I feel once you have played the story, there’s little re-playability as you know will know the ending and how it plays out. Its a very story driven game and this is where DLC’s and expansions are going to help enhance it and keep building on the world down the road.

However, from someone who doesn’t pick up a single player/office game, I loved this game. It keeps me very immersed in the story to the point I had to take breaks before facing the world again and continue on with Amicia’s story. A Plague Tale: Innocence is a good game, which unfortunately looses steam in its final chapters, preventing it from concluding as a great one. Although it has a very

promising and pleasant first half, it ends up stretching itself unnecessarily, delivering samey gameplay sections without much inspiration through it's middle, and chapters where the story becomes much less interesting towards the end. These factors take away some of the brilliance of what is still an impressive work of world-building and narrative that Asobo Studio introduced in the early hours of this adventure.

A Plague Tale is one of a kind and tells a compelling story about a fascinating historial period. Too bad it is too easy, simplistic and guided.

If you’re in the mood for a perfectly respectable, undemanding weekend game, A Plague Tale: Innocence is for you, though fair warning: The sight of so many dead bodies might shock anyone watching over your shoulder.

A Plague Tale: Innocence is an odd and often frustrating experience, with an escort mission front and center. There's a lot here that makes it worth checking out, though, even if only once.

In some ways, A Plague Tale: Innocence is a triumphant narrative adventure bursting with originality, boasting a setting that we really haven't seen in this space before. However, it's often held back by failing to capitalise on so much potential.

The Digital Fix - 7 / 10

The sweeping takeaway from A Plague Tale: Innocence is that it's an imperfect but powerful story on death. It dares to explore the impact of killing in an industry that treats violence as routine and ordinary. That doesn't make up for some glaring oversights in the acting and writing, however, but if you can stomach seas of vermin and 10-15 hours of thick French accents, this may be the story-driven stealth title for you.

A Plague Tale: Innocence has some clunky writing in places, and its play gets stale after a time, but it prevails with a compelling mystery and a beautiful world.

The latest Asobo Studio release is grim, gory, and a bit of a grind.

A Plague Tale: Innocence has a great story, but the gameplay has a level of convenience that undercuts the perilous world.

Despite some issues with consistency and being a bit limited in terms of gameplay, this is an experience i won't soon forget.  this is one of the most unique titles in the genre.

It gets in its own way by deciding that something bigger was needed to keep the player’s attention. It’s a sour end to an otherwise great game.

From its early moments, the game will grab your attention with its immersive story and great characters, if you are looking for a unique single player experience A Plague Tale: Innocence will give you that but with some compromises in the gameplay part.

Equal parts beautiful, repulsive, simplistic, and mature, A Plague Tale: Innocence is difficult to recommend but impossible to dismiss.

Push Square - 6 / 10

A Plague Tale: Innocence deserves respect for daring to be different, funnelling you through a bleak European backdrop that's seldom seen. Despite some neat ideas, though, the stealth and puzzle mechanics drag, and the story can't quite make up its mind about what it wants to be. Furthermore, while the presentation is spectacular, the project lacks polish in key areas and overstays its welcome at times.

Slant Magazine - 3 / 5 stars

It's unfortunate that A Plague Tale's story falls short of its technical accomplishments.

A Plague Tale: Innocence is a stunningly beautiful, and finely-crafted… ok. It's an ok stealth/action-adventure, with ok characters and drama, and oceans of rats that add an ok survival horror vibe to it. Certainly a fun title, but not exactly a big recommendation.

With A Plague Tale: Innocence, the French Asobo Studios present an intense stealth adventure that immediately captivates you with its gripping story about the siblings Amicia and Hugo, always carried by a dense atmosphere, beautiful locations and authentic medieval backdrops. Over 12-15 hours you will be guided through the varied events at a pleasant pace, not only getting to know the horrors of war and the "Black Death" as well as the machinations of the Inquisition, but also quiet moments, helpful inhabitants and companions growing close to your heart.

A Plague Tale: Innocence entertained me wonderfully and even surpassed my anticipatory expectations. On top of that there is the wonderful soundtrack of Olivier Deriviere and therefore my conclusion that you shouldn't miss this narrative experience.

I really do suggest playing with French audio and English subtitles as it enhances immersion a lot!

As the one other language I can actually understand a bit of i def plan to. Brotherhood of the Wolf is one of my favorite movies and it’s sooo much better in its native language.
