Ubisoft just concluded its Q2 earnings call, a strange event where relatively-okay financial numbers were overshadowed by the company being on the defensive due to delays, workplace allegations, and questions about free-to-play. But one element that seemed to make both Ubisoft and investors happy was the discussion of blockchain.

Ubisoft's future blockchain ambitions were mentioned both in its earnings release and a few times during the call. As noted in its press release, Ubisoft is funding blockchain gaming company Animoca Brands, which advertises itself on its website as "the global leader in branded blockchain gaming."

I don't even know what blockchain means and it just sounds bad already because Ubisoft is involved.

If it makes you feel better 99% of people who champion it don't actually know what it is either.

It's a special mode in Roblox where you form a chain. Very fun!

I'm really curious what Ubisoft's play is in the event that Epic stops providing so much money for exclusives. As I understand it, Fortnite interest has waned pretty significantly over time, besides the big spike for chapter 2. At some point it will stop making sense to lose a bunch of money every time you want to get a new exclusive, and based on the leaked EGS data a while back, it didn't really seem like they were converting huge numbers of people into paying customers outside of Fortnite.

The biggest point of interest for me the entire time has been the longevity of the storefront. Certainly you have to hit a critical mass of paying customers before eventually someone starts questioning what you're doing with all that money. As they're privately owned they at least don't have any shareholder obligations, so they can continue to dump as much money as they want into the service, but that's just it: for how long? Certainly they've got the funds to run the actual store indefinitely, but those exclusives did not look cheap... aside from the ones that did, which I'm sure only makes future negotiations a headache for Epic.

Not to mention that after like 2 years of free games, that's like an expected store feature now. And it's a good one! A genuinely good service Epic has offered over the competition. But it can NOT be cheap.

The exclusives are not cheap, but wildly enough, the free games apparently are...at least according to the documents that came out during their lawsuit with Apple.

Over the first 10 months of the Epic Games Store.

There’s a huge amount of variance between how much Epic paid for each giveaway. At the top end is the $1.5 million it paid to give away the Batman Arkham trilogy games, but it also paid substantial amounts for Subnautica ($1.4 million) and Mutant Year Zero ($1 million). In comparison, the company paid much less for indie titles like Super Meat Boy ($50,000), Jackbox Party Pack ($60,000), and Fez ($75,000).

I'm going to guess they paid more for GTAV than they did for Subnautica. I'm ignoring the Batman games because that's a steal for Epic. $1.5 million to offer to the entire trilogy for free?

I feel like it would be easier for them to offer free games indefinitely than it would be to buy exclusives...unless those exclusives pay for themselves. From the looks of other reports, that hasn't been the case for most of their exclusives.

  • Commissar SFLUFAN changed the title to Update: EA CEO calls NFT and blockchain games "the future of our industry"

Can somone explain to me what an NFT/Blockchain game is?  Like I'm your grandma?  'Cause I don't get it.

It's using NFTs to track stupid videogame collectibles like Team Fortress hats or Fortnite skins. These companies are hoping people will trade and gamble them in the background, outside if they're control, and maybe get in on that sweet money laundering game. What? That's not what they're claiming? I don't believe any of them.

I'd only be somewhat okay with this if I can sell items I earn through normal play.  And have that count for store credit (not just an in-game storefront).  Think Steam trading cards.

Still, it'll push even more would-be Season Pass material beyond an additional paywall, or playwall.

  • Commissar SFLUFAN changed the title to Update: never one to miss out on bad ideas, Square Enix also looking to enter blockchain/NFT games segement

Just look for all the companies that were too late in the destiny clone or battle royal crazes and they will be coming out with blockchain shit. The products will arrive after numerous reboots and internal issues about a year and a half after everyone has moved on besides one or two already dominant entries.

I agree with Schreier. It's just people spouting a buzzword without any real consideration for what the tech can actually enable.

The metaverse conversation isn't much better, but at least there is some gesturing towards doing something new. With blockchain it's basically "what if the computer that stores your in game inventory was actually many different computers?"'

That's exactly it. Here my legitimate blockchain game idea. You're a smaller dev that doesn't want to spend money on infrastructure for, say, your pvp card based RPG. You sell new NFT cards on Amazon, matchmaking happens on Discord, matches are all direct p2p connections with decks being made up of NFT.

There you go. Legitimate use for the blockchain in gaming.

Also, none of that is something the likes of EA or Ubisoft needs to worry about about because they have a the resources in the world to run those servers on the backend.
