Returnal’s exploration is actually really good, but in the beginning you don’t get to enjoy it as much as you would in a Metroid game because you’re too busy shitting your pants.

Well, that, and you have all these things out of reach tormenting you.

Returnal is to Metroid what Bloodborne is to Castlevania in my opinion.

Maybe I need to finally check out Bloodborne

I’m skeptical though. I’ve heard people say that Dark Souls basically “out-Zelda’d Zelda, before. And like...pffft, no. Dark Souls ain’t no Legend of Zelda

So to hear Bloodborne is similar to Castlevania....eeeehhhhh I guess I’ll have to see for myself. I can’t imagine it’s more Castlevania than say, Bloodstained.

How much Dark Souls have you played and what specifically did they say in the comparison, out of curiosity?

On a related note to this, Breath of the Wild has some weird ass mechanics (one annoying labyrinth and insta-fail "don't step on flowers" side quest), but as far as exploration, *chef's kiss*. I enjoy coming back to it each day just to see what else I can stumble upon and mark with those stamps. Though that fucker who expands my inventory vanish, so I must find his home!!!

An hour or so...maybe two? And only once, over at a buddy's house.

They said the combat specifically was better than The Legend of Zelda, which...yeah probably is. Maybe it's just me, but Zelda has never really been about combat. It's about exploration, discovery, puzzle-solving...that kind of thing. And done with a bit of whimsy. Maybe I need to play more Souls but what I played, the game had NONE of that.

Not that that's bad, but I just think it's a weak comparison. A LOT of other games have better combat that Zelda. IMO, anyway.

I mean they're different games and it's not a 1:1 thing. Bloodborne doesn't have platforming just like Returnal isn't focused on exploration like Metroid, so that's what I meant. Neither are 1:1 but the rest is so absurdly spot-on in regards to feeling like "the Metroid/Castlevania I always wanted but didn't know I wanted" in terms of aesthetics, mood and tight gameplay that I've thought it for both games.

And I fucking LOVE Dark Souls and that Zelda statement is silly, just like saying Returnal out-Metroids Metroid etc. would be silly. They have different priorities but at a base level they do feel like some sideways evolution of said games to me, yeah, that includes the Dark Souls and Zelda thing.

Bloodborne to me is the 3D Castlevania we never got because it's a game Konami would've never come up with in their wildest nightmares in terms of intensity and aesthetics. Like adult Castlevania taken off the leash, From went absolutely wild in that game. There's an area called Hemwick, Charnel Lane in the game that literally looks like the opening stage of Castlevania III transported into 3D. Also, it has a razor-bladed whip.

Dark Souls is big on discovery and exploration but a bit lite on the whimsy.

I agree with most of that post but Dark Souls, the first one, had an approach to exploration more in line with what people ended up praising BotW for I think. Or the very first Zelda theoretically. It plops you into this massive, gorgeous world and just lets you be an archaeologist and just play. It's definitely more stripped-back than Zelda dungeons with puzzles and so on but in terms of exploration and discover, it's and absolutely incredible experience. You should really give the games a shot.

You should probably play more of it. :p

Hell if I know what out-Zeldas Zelda (I'm loving this one), but I can say the Souls series, especially Bloodborne, excel at combat and exploration. Discovery is HUGE in those games.

Alright, fine! This PlayStation thread has convinced me to play a game on my Switch! :p

The version of Dark Souls: Remastered on Switch is actually better in my opinion. Someone else ported it and didn't fuck up the lighting of the original and introduce audio glitches that kills the ambient audio in quite a few areas. It seems like the best version to play really in terms of being faithful to the original.

I hate rogue likes. I don't like the feeling that all my progress is mostly squashed if and when I die. I don't mind that if I die I go back to my last save. That is on me and I will learn by saving often. Auto saves are a nice modern option. I also don't like I would have to finish a game in one sitting or start over.

10 million sold. Nice I wonder how many they could have sold if you could just walk into a store or load up a site and buy it whenever you want.

Console wars were super fun when we were kids. It’s embarrassing to watch dudes in their 30s and 40s fighting over which video game system is the best

I think the most embarrassing thing is the Glenn Beck "just asking questions" crowd that only show up in these threads.

Right? Imagine being an adult and not owning a PC to game on to supplement inferior video game systems.

Almost as embarrassing as watching older dudes debate anything involving superhero’s or space laser swords

Fake news. It's still fun.

Silly fun, and something I think we are self-aware of.

Learning about that Git Gud ?

What is this huge dragon with a hammer coming out of nowhere? That is apparently something I can't kill?

I don't recall this part when I played this game years ago at my buddy's place...is this a new section created for this "remaster" or what?
