Spider-Man: Miles Morales delivers 6.5 million sales, MLB: The Show surpasses two million, Ratchet & Clank over one million

Quote

Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, Ryan adds that PS5 has seen 'double digit growth' in terms of engagement -- whether that's monthly users or gameplay time -- compared with the launch window of PS4.

"Engagement on the platform is the highest that we've ever seen whichever way you look at it," he says.

"Whether it's the number of people measured by a metric such as MAU [Monthly Active Users], or whether it's the time that these people spend playing games. Both of these metrics are showing very significant double-digit growth compared to the launch window of PS4, the previous high-water mark.

Quote

"The milestone is notable especially considering the supply constraint Sony and the rest of the tech industry operated under over the past year," comments Carolina Milanesi, president and principal analyst at Creative Strategies.

"I am sure the pandemic played some role in generating demand as people were stuck at home spending more time on video consumption and gaming. Consumers who were able to retain their job and work from home and therefore had a regular income might have also ended up with more disposable income because the lack of other forms of entertainment like movies, theater and travel freed up money.

"Yet there is no question PS5 itself was a great upgrade from an overall experience perspective. The hardware, the availability of the two price points and content like Miles Morales that brought to life the enhancements really delivered for Sony."

Impressive for sure. I can't wait until 3 years from now when they are in store for trade in.

You just gotta wait for the first revision of the system (other than a screw) to see them in store. Probably see trade-in deals when that happens and a huge surplus of these guys in store.

Ratchet only sold 1 million copies?  1 of 10 PS5 owners wanted to experience arguably the only game that truly shows off next gen features and graphics?

Always surprises me some of the big exclusives don't sell far more when so many claim they are the reason to own the consoles.

I was gonna say the same thing. A 10-percent sales figure for the first truly "next gen" game is kinda head scratching. Makes me wonder how many of these "fastest selling" PS5's are still sitting in scalper storage.

only?

That’s a huge attach rate for the fastest selling Ratchet game, easily outselling 2016 Ratchet even though more PS4s were in the wild.

Miles sold six million. Rethink this line.

There were hundreds or thousands of PS4 titles out to play in 2016 when the last Ratchet hit.  There are what, 3 PS5 exclusive titles, Ratchet being the darling of that list.

Just surprises me that only 1/10 people feel it was worth buying on their new PS5.

For what it's worth, I have basically zero interest in the game and I have a PS5.

Yeah, I haven't bought it yet, waiting for it to be discounted personally.  I've played a few of the previous Ratchet games, and while enjoyable, definitely not a must play for me.  Single player games I can wait for discounts as there isn't really anything lost not playing at launch in most cases.

I do wonder if the $70 price tag will have an affect on purchases on or near launch of some of these games, specifically the single player titles.  If Ratchet were $60, I honestly may have bought it, but there is just something about that $70 price for a single player game that I can wait to play when it drops to $40 that caused me to wait.

That's an impressive attach rate, and I think you're unfamiliar with sales of R&C games. They're not GOW/Spidey; they weren't selling boatloads prior to this, with 2016 breaking a record then. There were more consoles and potential buyers in 2016, with a cheaper game ($40) instead of $70. A 1:10 attach rate is a pretty big deal and stellar numbers.

Relative to what was expected of Returnal, those are still excellent numbers right?

Oh yeah, especially when you consider how many people work at Housemarque compared to the bigger studios.

Actually, scratch that: the fact that Sony shared these numbers like that means it's good. :p

Ratchet is "teh kiddie" franchise and thus isn't as popular on a Playstation platform as it could have been on say, a Nintendo platform.

Similarly, I think a Metroid game on Playstation may sell better than it traditionally has on Nintendo.

Or maybe not. What do I know.

Yeah 1 in 10 is really really good for Rachet. Remember PlayStation the preferred system for more casual gamers. I would venture a TON of those PS5 owners probably still only have Madden and CoD downloaded. Buying a game because it’s the first true next gen game is very much a thing the vocal internet/hardcore crowd would do. And just based on this thread alone you have people that aren’t a big fan of the franchise/waiting for a sale/teh kiddiez. So it’s really more surprising that it’s that high.

But you know, Xbox piggies always trying to hate and sling their slop around making everyone else as sad as them.

I'm not discounting the 1 million in sales, its an impressive number.  I'm just personally surprised, as Ratchet has kind of been the face of the PS5 since it's announcement.  The first true next gen visuals, the first game showing off its SSD.  I personally just felt like a lot more of the early adopter PS5 owning crowd would buy it just to have a "Next Gen" game to experience on the console.

I came damn close to buying it a few times simply for the reason to see what it looks like graphically and the level loading stuff even though I had little interest in the gameplay itself.  I thought it'd be at least 2+ million.

It's probably just me spending a lot of time on Twitter and seeing a lot of hype around certain things that may have thrown my expectations out of whack.

I think it's a little of Twitter and a little of not knowing the history of R&C. :p

It sold very well -- a million in a month -- and it has a very good attach rate. It's just not God of War big, which most games aren't.

However, the 1:10 attach rate suggests that this is the biggest it's ever been as that's a lot of PS5s that decided they wanted it, and sales are going to bump up those numbers through the holidays.

Girlfriend Reviews called it the 3rd person Super Metroid Daddy Nintendo never gave the boyfriend.

While it definitely has its priority not on exploration but combat instead, a major percentage of Returnal is still the current-gen Metroid nobody's going to make. Returnal is to Metroid what Bloodborne is to Castlevania in my opinion.
